How much is reasonable for a holiday ABROAD for a family 3 during half term?

Just wondering. I know lots of variables and range can be huge, but what do you typically spend going abroad during half term? A week in Faro has gotten ridiculous in my opinion.

It could easily be £4.5k for a standard week. And very easy to spend more.

Branleuse · 14/06/2025 22:21

In half term its usually cheaper than in the summer holidays. Which half term are you thinking of?

luckycat888 · 14/06/2025 22:32

Any… but also summer hols.
I'm new to this term time school stuff so just interested.
Everything, even in Europe is so expensive!

It’s no cheaper in half term now than it is in the summer hols.
I’d expect to pay 2-3k self catering and 4K upwards for all inclusive. It’s crazy as I remember it being about half that 10 years ago!

MrsdMrsIMrsffi · 14/06/2025 22:44

july/ august are usually most expensive followed by May.
Easter and October hols are usually similar but October is usually less- if resorts are still open then that is.

So many different options though if you want AI, 4 or 5 star, loads of facilities.

I would say for a 4 star in August AI about £4-5 k but when you compare this to a typical haven type holiday in a decent caravan (not even top of the range) you’re paying about £1500 for a week without food and activities that would easily go over £2k.

where are you looking at?

Clearinguptheclutter · 14/06/2025 22:47

I wouldn’t say we “typically spend” as this one was a one off but a week in a nice hotel for four of us half board this past May half term was £4.5k. Probably about £6k with spends. It was lovely but it’s a totally ridiculous amount of money.

That said people on here talk about going to Ikos and school holidays you’ve be talking over £10k for that. So clearly I’m a cheapskate.

Thethingswedoforlove · 14/06/2025 22:49

Which half term did you mean specifically?

Nah, I'm paying £1k for the nicest haven caravan, nice south coast resort, in August, and there's no way I'll spend anywhere near £500 on food and activities, so it's definitely way cheaper if these prices for abroad are correct.

Picklechicken · 14/06/2025 22:59

Completely depends on how fancy you want to go. I’ve priced up holidays for around £2.5k for 3 from Jet2 during half term / summer before when I was browsing - mainly 3/4 star resorts, self catering, Balearics or Croatia. If you want to go fancier then you’re looking at around £4.5k for a week somewhere nicer, and more like £6k for a week somewhere 5 star as a minimum. (We’re going to a 5 star resort in Majorca in the summer and it’s cost us nearly £6k for the week).

For something cheaper - Haven. Or Forest Holidays. Like centre parcs but smaller and cheaper.

Something different - P and O, fjords cruise in the summer hols, 3 people comes out at around £3k depending on the grade of cabin. We’re doing this next year.

onwards2025 · 14/06/2025 23:08

For 3 of us, 1 week AI 4 star hotel mid August about £2k the last few summers, using free kids space, both very nice hotels.

May half term there are a lot of options but Europe can be very pricey as it's a popular time to go, we've done long haul for same price. Anywhere from £2-3k

October half term - for decent weather and Europe it's pricey as far less options than May half term. If not so fussed about the weather can get cheap end of season prices £1.5k, if want better weather for beach etc then £4K

EllieQ · 14/06/2025 23:15

We booked a week in Crete in the May half term for £2.4k for two adults and one child (flights, transfer, and hotel - booked through Tui ). This was for bed and breakfast in a hotel about ten minutes walk from the beach, in a quiet resort. Hotel was small, but had a pool and a bar.

We probably spend about £400 on a couple of days out, meals, drinks.

luckycat888 · 14/06/2025 23:50

@Clearinguptheclutterwhere do people get this kind of money to spend on a week’s holiday?!

OP posts:
luckycat888 · 14/06/2025 23:51

@Picklechickenits more about where my budget could stretch to. Ideally £2.5k max but it looks like that won’t even get me into CentreParks let alone on abroad. Unless I go for a European centreparks…

luckycat888 · 14/06/2025 23:53

@Picklechicken pre-Covid places like Alicante, Majorca, Faro etc were seen as reasonably cheap holidays but Majorca for £6k is nuts to me.

TutTutTutSigh · 14/06/2025 23:55

3k for an ok all inclusive. Probably 2k + all food and drink for self catering. 4k + for a nice all inclusive.

CallySally · 15/06/2025 00:05

Have you looked at eurocamps? Great for kids to meet other kids and reasonably priced depending on where you go and which resort.

Ive seen quite a few less than £1000 for a week during the summer holidays. We had a great time when we went to one in France. If you take your car you've just got petrol and the ferry crossing. Visiting a French supermarket part of the experience!

We just came back from all inclusive in crete with swim up room for 2400 for the three of us on jet2. Looking for next year at similar prices and there are loads. Gouves waterpark, great for kids with loads of pools for all ages.

LemonyPicket · 15/06/2025 02:19

Depending on where you live in the uk… we live about 1.5 hours from south coast. So we are doing ferry from Portsmouth to Brittany (few different ports to choose from) return for 2 adults 3 kids in August is £700. Then Airbnb lots of lovely places on Brittany coast near beaches, we’ve found a decent self catering house for £840 for a week. Plus a bit of petrol, not much as we only have a 1.5 drive this side and then an hour drive in Brittany from the ferry so let’s say £60 petrol is £1600 for a weeks holiday. Plus spending money and food, we normally do a big supermarket shop when we arrive and eat out once a day and at home for the other two meals so budget £100 a day spends. Will come in under £2.5k total

Scottishskifun · 15/06/2025 02:29

There are ways to bring it down but depends on where you are in the country. We live in Scotland and drive to England to fly as its between 1.4-2.5k cheaper in Scottish Holidays.
The same is true in reverse when it's English holidays but not Scottish (they go backearlierin Aug for example). Many Scottish councils don't do a May half term.

Lazery · 15/06/2025 04:47

For abroad ie Med we budget for around £1 - £1.5k per person for 10 days. Soending money and car hire will be on top of this.

Where were you in Crete @Tereseta ? We paid a similar price for a B&B package this half term. We were on the north coast.

OhFortheLoveOv · 15/06/2025 07:34

Really depends on where you go. Lots of options in UK can come out under £1k per week in school hols but that’s normally self catering in cottage or on a caravan park and may not be in popular spots. This year we got a very good package deal on a 4 star hotel in Spain half board for 2k for 11 nights in August, but that was lucky normally it’s well over 3k.

user1476613140 · 15/06/2025 07:36

We did DLP , 4 DC and two adults. October holidays last year. Around 4k (trip to Harry Potter studio en route).

LoudSnoringDog · 15/06/2025 07:43

Package holidays to the Med have gone crazy. We usually do a weeks AI to Greece / Spain or Turkey and a decent hotel would be about 4/4.5k for 2ad and 1chd.
I looked at doing the Thai Gulf islands myself and managed to get 2 weeks doing Bangkok / koh phangnan/ koh Tao / koh samui including interconnecting flights and boats for £4.3k.
