Anyone used these insect repellent bracelets?

They’re by a company called pestects.co.uk (I’ve tried copying a link but isn’t working for some reason) and I’m tempted to buy a set but can’t afford to throw money away if they’re useless. Reviews mostly v good but I think I’d prefer some MNers to guide me, so if you’ve bought these I’d welcome your opinion 😊

Oh dear. I have just bought some. I hope they work. I don't want to use Deet, so generally use Incognito which works for me, Avon used to be good too.

I have to be careful too, as I react really badly to all and any bite. Extremely sensitive. Come up in massive swellings, sometimes blisters, sometimes bruises.

Hawkmoth · 03/07/2025 23:20

They work fine for Scottish midges for me, and an absolute godsend for DS, who has sensory issues which mean he hates having anything put on his skin.

minnienono · 03/07/2025 23:25

Only proper deet spray works, and if in malaria zones cover up at dawn and dusk as well

AuntMastodon · 03/07/2025 23:48

We used this brand on a family holiday in Spain and they were useless. DD even got a mosquito bite right under her bracelet!

Honeypizza · 04/07/2025 11:51

I was eyeing these up the other day for our holiday as DH refuses to use deet and I thought they would be great for DS. He could wear one on his ankle and wrist, although maybe the smell would be too strong going off comments on this thread. Thanks for the Incognito suggestion @HostaCentral, I haven't looked at that one before.

They worked well for me in Thailand.
They were not perfect and I still got the odd bite but nothing like some of the people we met.

JLbaby · 04/07/2025 12:04

We used the pestsects ones last year in Spain. Mozzies love me and one of my DDs. we did still get bitten but only a couple of times, which is way less than normal (normally it’s like join the dots!). We wore them on our ankles. Would definitely recommend, I’m buying some more for this year.

WorriedRelative · 04/07/2025 12:05

I used a different brand in Thailand and it worked. We did use spray too when going to particularly high risk places (evening boat trip on the river) DH found them less good but he didn't keep it on all the time and didn't wear it closely fitting. He normally suffers more though.

AmyDuPlantier · 04/07/2025 12:36

Yeah. I got bitten ALL AROUND IT 😆😆

backinthebox · 04/07/2025 12:47

DEET works because insects have a sensory receptor in their feet which the can ‘taste’ the DEET with, which causes them to fly off. Bracelets are just smelly, but don’t actively deter a hungry insect. The only thing close to DEET is picardin, which is beginning to be used in some insect repellents. If you are not going anywhere with insect-transmitted diseases, then give the bracelets a go. But if, for continued good health, it is essential you don’t get a mozzie bite, go for DEET. Trust me, malaria is worse than having a chemical repellent on your skin.

islamann · 04/07/2025 12:59

I used them last year in Spain. I always get bitten and react badly so wore one on each wrist and ankle, no bites.

AvidJadeShaker · 04/07/2025 21:46

I just returned from Italy and so many people had lots of bites. My DH and I sprayed a small amount of Jungle formula on our ankles and wrists before going out in the evening and we didn’t any bites.
In Argentina (years ago) we used an app that supposedly keeps mossies away and it did seem to work.

SoSoOuting · 05/07/2025 14:32

I seem to be a magnet for biting creatures and started using Anbar Leather Mosquito Repellent Bracelets from Amazon a week ago. So far no bites with just one on my wrist. Cheap too.

ChristmaslightsuptilJanuary · 05/07/2025 20:29

They are shite. I got bitten under the bracelet.

kangeeto · 06/07/2025 22:08

I would recommend Parakito - they do wrist velcro things and key chains that you can hang from belts or bags and insert a pellet into them.

I used them in conjunction with a deet spray in a malarial area and I didn't get bitten at all. Others using deet too did get bitten so I couldn't be 100% sure they helped but I think they probably did. My companions were convinced these were the difference.

I was using both a wrist one on one side and the belt one on the other side of my body. They do the wrist strap in different colours so you can be outfit co-ordinated.

This was about 10 years ago so I also couldn't comment on what the current version of it is like - these sort of product tend to change their formula.

None of them work, Deet is the only effective repellent against mozzies (and can speak from experience of Dengue and ChickV) if your a tasty morsel you will get bitten. Dont waste your money, believe me we have tried everything.

angelcake20 · 08/07/2025 07:16

We used the Pestects ones in Costa Rica and I once saw a mozzie sit on the bracelet to bite DH. Completely useless.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 08/07/2025 08:00

Useless

yakkity · 08/07/2025 08:01

The ones I got REEKED of repellent. Headache inducing levels

Hoppinggreen · 08/07/2025 08:04

I bought some to use in Mexico and I thought they worked quite well until we were in a situation where we had to shower to swim in a certain area in the jungle so washed off all mozzie spray and they sure as hell didn't work on their own!!
Look pretty though
