We are hoping to book a holiday to New York and I have no idea where to start.
We have never been.
Can anyone advise the best time to go, the best airport to fly i to and where we should stay?
Wed live somewhere witha pool / spa. It's a minefield and very confusing.
Thank you .

We flew to Newark and stayed at Hyatt House in Jersey City. Amazing views of the city, one stop on the PATH to world trade centre and lots of good eating options near the hotel. Transfer from airport was 20 mins and half the price of going into the city.

Plan a holiday to NYC like you would one to London.

Hotels will be small and expensive but you will spend very little time there. No real point getting one with bars, breakfast etc.. NYC is stuffed with places to eat and drink, at pretty much all hours of tne day Public transport and walking is the way to get around.

Air bnb is heavily restricted in NYC so be cateful if you decide to go down the "bargain" apartment route.

Oh and take a lot of money to tip.

Chelsea is the best area in my opinion with teens. Moto hotel was great. But you will need two rooms so an apartment might cost in better. We went July 2023, so it was hot but what was amazing was the amount of places that sell really good smoothies! We did loads of walking so take comfy shoes. Skyline walk, battery park, Statue of Liberty etc all great. There is a couple of indoor markets in the Chelsea area that has good restaurants and an amazing Korean BBQ place. If you are going in warm weather get the subway out to K island.

We stayed in Jersey city last time. Not as convenient as being in manhattan but worth the savings. Make sure you’re by the PATH station!

AirBnB was officially banned in NYC. the ban isn’t very effective but it’s a risk.

If you are happy to share a room look at clu. Quarters. They have a pull out bed in the room and are really nice hotels: I stayed at one near world trade centre and close to lots of metro links.

the rooms have a small kitchenette with fridge and toster. My 7 year old wants cereal first thing in the morning so this would suit us.

I’ve been only once and stayed at the New Yorker as it was part of a tour ( cruise) package and I wouldn’t stay there agin. It was tired and dated. We did a day room the Roosevelt in the way home and that was the same - tired and tatty they are huge hotels. -Some of the places are like 700. Some have bedbugs (sorry- not what you want to here)

The room in NYC are mostly small. Get a city view and get a one with two beds as it’s the same price as one with a king bed but bigger (sweeping generalisation) get a fridge and try and get one with a free breakfast as food is so expensive- just have breakfast and one other meal and a snack. We have free breakfast with Hilton as part of AMEX membership -Riu plaza always have free breakfast.

I would consider staying at the Parker next time - we went to the burger joint in there and it was a world away.
Friend recommend afinia Fifty. I’ve also looked at the royalton.

id stay off the beaten track a bit too

We flew from JFK (got the train there from Canada) and it was fine but any airport would be ok!

We went August and it was hot but fine. Some of the sidewalks smell a bit of “trash” . But I love summer!

Have you joined a NYC group in FB

We stayed in the Millennium Downtown, right opposite the Oculus and One World Trade Center - great location and we could see the Oculus and the Staten Island ferry from our hotel room window.

Booked through British Airways holidays.

Short term holiday lets such as AirBnB aren't banned in New York, but there are more hoops for landlords to jump through now.
