Would you take your kids to Egypt

Last year I booked a once in a lifetime trip to
sharm el shiek for my hubby and i and our3 kids. The hotel is all inclusive, 5* and quite special and we’re also booked on a day trip to see the Pyramids. But after today’s events in the Middle East I’m anxious and worried about taking my children to a volatile part of the world. The tour operator, have given me the option to reschedule or change destination. But I have to decide by Sunday. This option woudl also mean buying new flights, and losing our day trip money (£1k) 😬Now I know Egypt are generally peacekeepers, but even Daily news Egypt said this today. "This action jeopardises the well-being of the region's peoples and threatens to plunge the entire region into overwhelming chaos," the statement continued.

i don’t mean to alarm anyone. But it’s worth remembering that ww1 started following a relatively minor incident.

Any advice appreciated

Not a chance - even if I won a £20k luxury holiday with an extra £10k spending money.

Never been but wouldn’t go, especially now. Heard so many bad things about uncivilised and primitive behaviour from the part of locals, about the dirt, the poverty, the treatment of animals, women etc.

No, regardless of recent events. Been there, and will never go back.

I went 30 years ago when I was 15 with my parents and we had a great time but had to have an armed escort through the desert which was a bit scary. Lots of beggars and kids without shoes so on the way home my mum gave mine and my sisters holiday shoes to the beggars as they had none. Egypt is a truly wonderful country but sadly I wouldn’t take my children now as I don’t think it to be safe with what has gone on from when I went to now.

Nah…how women are treated puts me off particularly with a teenage girl

I went in the 90s to hurghada and Luxor. Had a good holiday but didn’t love it. A taxi driver tried to scam us and there is a lot of poverty and cruelty. 6 months after we visited there was a massacre at the Temple of Hapshetsek (sp) targeting tourists. We’d been there and it was amazing. But I doubt I’ll go back. It certainly wouldn’t be my choice for a holiday of a lifetime.

Yes. It’s my favourite holiday destination to visit with my 3 children. Loads to do and the people are lovely.

CombatBarbie · 14/06/2025 18:36

Been twice with the kids, loved it. I would try move down to Hurghada area though away from the borders. I specifically didn't book sharm for this reason.

I'd go to the hotel. Absolutely no way would I take young kids to Cairo. Having done the pyramids as an adult, Cairo is dangerous and incredibly overwhelming with salesmen and very young kids (2+) begging. Sack off the pyramids and stay in the hotel the whole time. No ice in drinks. No washed salad.

This - we were in Sharm in April, absolutely fine, felt safe, lovely hotel, lovely people. I'd definitely drop the pyramids trip.

bigtalltrees · 14/06/2025 18:44

Absolutely not

luckylavender · 14/06/2025 18:50

I love Egypt but I wouldn’t go now

OneZippyPlumBalonz · 14/06/2025 18:50

Omg no sorry no thank you! I'd rather go to..... Anywhere really

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/06/2025 18:53

If you like pyramids, can I suggest Guatemala. Beautiful place, wonderful people, great food, biggest pyramid in the world. Although you won’t go to that one because it’s WELL off the beaten track for now.

Glitchymn1 · 14/06/2025 18:53

Safety? Yes

But I wouldn’t as the cruelty to animals is vile, touching from hotel staff if you are blonde is wild, food isn’t great, it is ok for a week of extreme heat/pool action. Possobly good diving.

I did a trip from Luxor to Aswan with DD when she was 15. Off the ship we had constant hassle from men. We decided to go in a group with others but it didn’t alter anything. Great for Egyptian history. Wouldn’t go near a large resort - you could be anywhere. I want to go to Cairo when the museum fully opens too but I’m into history not man made resorts. Agree about animals too. Horses in poor condition. Ugh! However that’s not just Egypt!
