10 days in Slovenia

We have 10 days in Slovenia in July. Up for hiking , swimming, waterfalls etc. has anyone used the mini bus type hop on hop off transport. We won’t be hiring a car. Any recommendations of places to go gratefully received! We are staying in one place so would be good to have an idea of palaces to go that are near each other to save going back and fourth.

Joining in if I may. Dh just announced he’d like to go. Due to life stuff we have both lost confidence so I’m gathering as much info as I can which is ridiculously hard mentally!
any and all tips and places to stay really welcome

We had a fortnight in Slovenia a few years ago and had a great time. We spent a couple of nights at Lake Bohinj and it is lovely. We got the boat to the head of the lake and had a lovely walk back. There is also a cable car.

Our first week was all hiking as we did a self guided hotel to hotel style walk with InnTravel that took us from Kransky Gora in the North, through Bohinj and ended at Bled.

The second week we stayed in a lovely place near Postojna and managed to see loads. Mind you we hired a car. Any reason why you are not keen? We found it very easy driving and, since it is a small country, most things were not a long drive.

The Postojna cave is well worth a visit, as is Predjama castle. We visited the cost at Piranha and also had a day in Trieste (preferred Piranha). One evening we went bear watching with a local guide. Llubjana is also nice for a visit.

I would second everything @5foot5had already said. I absolutely loved Slovenia - DH and I had a couple of weeks there last summer.

Lake Bled is beautiful - row out to the island, lovely walk all round, swimming at the lido and from the banks at the rowing club end.

Bohinj is also beautiful. Lovely walking both by the lake and up in the mountains.

Postojna caves and Skocjan caves are really interesting (I preferred Skocjan as less touristy).

The Vrsic Pass was great. Beautiful views and the Russian Chapel is worth stopping for a look. There is a very interesting museum (displays also in English) in Kobarid about WWII, which we popped into for a quick look and ended up staying for ages (neither of us are particularly history buffs!).

Piran is a lovely seaside town that was part of the Venetian empire.

Ljubljana is a great small city - castle, lots of cafes and people watching opportunities.

There was a great mix of people from all over Europe - lots of different languages being spoken - but that also meant that everyone’s second language was English so we had no problem talking to people or understanding what was going on. Really friendly atmosphere. I hadn’t realised that the NW parts of the country have at various parts of its history been under Italian control, which means there’s a big influence on the food.

We hired a car and driving was really very straightforward. However, we took a bus out to the airport at the end and that was dead easy. While we were at the bus station it looked like there were plenty of bus options to get around.

I think you’ll love it!

@HenriettaMusgrove I forgot the Russian Chapel! One of the walks we did in the Kransky Gora are took us past there.

Bohinj is beautiful. So is Bled. The Vintnar Gorge is lovely for a few hours hike. Piran is really pretty and unusual because it has a concrete beach (infinitely better than it sounds). Ljubljana is a lovely city and worth a couple of days. Go on a Friday when they have street food fairs in the old town.

@5foot5 we had an incredible stroke of luck. The chapel caretaker happened to be there as we walked up and let us have a quick look inside before he locked the door. It was beautiful inside- very Russian- with photos of the soldiers who died. Very poignant.

I should have added that we also visited Maribor, which was nice but if I went again, I’d cut that from the itinerary and stay longer in the western side of the country.

Thanks for replies. We aren’t hiring a car as there are 6 of us, three older teens that may go off on their own a bit. Off to Google some of your rec commendations

We stayed in Kranska Gora and saw there were lots of cycle routes mainly parallel o the roads, separated by maybe 50m of trees etc, which were generally quite flat, and well used. You can hire the cycles.
