More and more I’m hearing of passengers bei g asked to move seats , even if paid for seat . My friend booked 3 seats together , asked to move for famiky of 7 , so young children could sit together. Flight attendant said flight could not leave unless children with parents!
speaking to
Others this seems to be happening more and more . Harassed/guilt trip by other passengers and cabin crew.😡😡😡😡

Well then the flight doesn't leave. They can get off.

BashfulClam · 12/06/2025 13:33

Only if they reimburse me both seat fees. I pay for both seats to sit together so want that fee back. TBH I can would use my hidden disability to its full advantage as it’s the only thing it’s any bloody good for.

Jbck · 12/06/2025 13:36

Think the budget airlines have in the T&Cs now you can be asked to move even if you have paid for a specific seat.

Brefugee · 12/06/2025 13:37

i would offer to sell my seat to the highest bidder if i felt inclined (I probably wouldn't though). This is a mess of the airline's own making. At booking any under 12 (or appropriate age, IDK) children should have to have a seat booked for the booking to proceed.

If people aren't prepared to swap, the non-seat-bookers should be asked/told to take the next flight. Are airlines really going to sit and wait like a schoolteacher waiting for someone to own up?

I would at LEAST expect my booking fee back, and something else on top.

Helpmeplease2025 · 12/06/2025 13:54

I wouldn’t move for anyone if I’ve paid for seat. We had this on the way home from a holiday last year - a dad on his own with two kids had not prebooked so they were going all over asking people to move, but it was basically a plane full of families, so no one wanted to move. There was a stand off for 30 mins then they found one single person to move, but the poor person was moved from aisle to centre, given the spiel about how the plane can’t leave, etc. It’s unfair to pressure people, the people who won’t pay should have to miss the flight if there’s an issue, not pressure others.

purpleygrey · 12/06/2025 14:05

I pay to be seated with my children and I wouldn’t move.

if I was on my own i would as long as it was still an aisle seat.

Nannianni · 12/06/2025 20:21

Mmm , it is becoming a problem the. You could be 24 hours .

MellowPinkDeer · 12/06/2025 20:24

I always book extra leg room / extra room seats and I’m not swapping. I hate the entitled arseholes who try this on.

wwyd2021medicine · 12/06/2025 20:54

Harsh but they need to be left to arrange themselves properly on the next flight.

A few instances of this and the problem would be cured.

I don't normally bother paying for a seat with DH or DD if just Europe but I'm not doing long haul all seated separately.

Nannianni · 12/06/2025 21:09

They say you can get booking fee back , hassle bit if you want to complain to get comp big hassle and difficult.
I agree any child 12 under of a passenger with a disability needs to flag up.

surely can ask but do t have to.
mid on long haul ask fof business class or 1st class or compensation there and then.

feelingbleh · 12/06/2025 21:11

I mean they can ask you to move and you can say no

IShouldNotCoco · 12/06/2025 21:12

Why should people who paid for their seats move for others who are too tight to and have an entitled attitude? I have paid extra to sit with my two autistic children when we go on holiday next week and I won’t be moving.

Pelifor · 12/06/2025 21:27

If I was in charge -
The solution is to allocate seats when they take the booking and include the fee in the ticket price. If you want to buy a ticket and there are no seats left together you're not allowed to buy a child's ticket.
I would also ban cases as hand luggage and make everyone put their luggage in the hold .

It is a condition of carriage on all airlines that you must move if asked to do so by the crew. Otherwise you can be removed from the flight.

Just explaining it as it is, so nobody have a pop at me please.

Airlines charge for hold luggage not to rip you off, they don’t want you to put luggage in the hold. It increases turn around time and is labour intensive.

They also want the passenger price to appear as low as possible.

Pelifor · 13/06/2025 08:34

@StarlightLady yes I know that and know it will never happen, I was joking. My luggage always goes in the hold. It's the people carting great cases on board that annoy me.

StarlightLady · 13/06/2025 08:40

@Pelifor - I agree people should stick to size limits. Not helped by variation from airline to airline. The EU is looking at the possibility of standard sizing. Hopefully the UK will also take this on board.

l’m a carry on girl, after missing hold bags on 2 separate occasions. At least if my case goes over my head (and l don’t open it during a flight) l know where it is.

Have only used budget in the last couple of years so wasn't certain, not through choice though, Im happier to pay a bit more with everything included up front, much more transparent.
I’ve got fab seats in a couple of weeks, they would need to physically prise me off them 😂

MiddleAgedDread · 13/06/2025 10:38

I paid for an aisle seat last week so I could stretch my legs out as I had an under-seat cabin bag. Got onboard and an older lady was standing up in the middle seat talking to someone a couple of rows behind. Eventually she sat then but kept looking around and then asked me if i'd like a window seat. She clearly wanted me to swap so she could sit her husband. I just replied "no, I paid to choose an aisle seat" and that was the end of the conversation. Luckily there were 3 empty seats a couple of rows down so they both moved to those and I got an empty seat next to me. Win win!!

teksquad · 13/06/2025 10:40

I pay for aisle seats as I am very claustrophobic. If travelling alone id happily swap to any other aisle seat. Middle or window, absolutely no way.

Tallisker · 13/06/2025 10:49

I paid quite a lot extra for the front row seats but got kicked by a child behind me. The mother got really arsey with me when I asked them to stop the child kicking my seat, the cabin crew suggested I move to a row half way down the plane if I didn’t want to be kicked 🙄 I told them to move the people who were causing the problem, rather than the victim of their poor behaviour.

drspouse · 13/06/2025 11:10

The airlines should automatically seat children with their adults (don't have to be aisle or extra legroom seats, just with them) and then let people pay to choose the rest.
We always pay to choose seats if it's an option.

Eminybob · 13/06/2025 11:18

If it’s the airlines policy that children have to be seated next to parents, then those seats should be automatically assigned when booking.
They’re not, because they hope that they will scare the family into paying to sit together even though if they don’t they will end up together anyway.

The one and only time I didn’t pay to sit us all together we all got seats assigned all over the plane, including my then 2 year old on his own row. They moved us at check in but it was stressful and I don’t want to be that parent that makes other people move so now I always pay to have us sat together.

Airlines offer tickets at two price points so that people have the option of not paying extra to choose their seat if it’s not an issue to them where they sit. This is how flying has become more affordable.

mybrainpills · 13/06/2025 11:22

I wont give up my seat for anyone i paid for it.
I do fly first class a lot.
