Where to go east coast US in August

Hello,

my family and I are planning a trip in August to the US. For travel time and time difference we want to stay east coast (plus we have visited quite of lot of the west coast already)
We are thinking Florida - but I think it will be too humid (heat is ok) where else could we go on the east coast that has stuff to do plus nice lakes or beaches for swimming that is hot but not humid?
any suggestions greatly appreciated!

(p.s we will rent a car and plan to be away for 10-14 days kids are 4&7

I would go New England way. Spend some time in Boston, then maybe a combination of Rhode Island and Maine? NYC can be humid but tends to be quiet in August.

Cape Cod. We went last year. I’d go back in a heartbeat.

Boston is a really good city to visit as it is a walking town, follow the history trail all around the city.

Move on up to visit Salem (small town ). Drive on up the coast an visit Ogunquit (beach), Kittery outlet shopping. Portsmouth town Maine large historic place.

Follow that by Arcadia National park in Maine stunningly beautiful coastline.

Have fun!

North Carolina, the Outer Banks. Very family oriented and not commercial. Popular with local/US families but not really on the radar with Brits. Mostly rental properties but there are some hotels. Might be a bit late re availability for this year. The Carolinas in general are very beautiful.

It's Hot and humid up and down the east coast in August. I was going to suggest Washington, DC as the monuments and many other sites are free. It depends on if you're interested in US history. The Smithsonian is amazing and so many choices. I would go first thing in the morning, or see what sites/monuments are open in the evenings. Staying outside the city is cheaper and Metro is easy to navigate. It will be hot, humid. You could also plan to spend time at the shore in Delaware or Maryland.

New England was my other suggestion. So many historical and quaint places to see from Massachusetts to Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine and/or upstate New York.

I’d mosey up the coast from Boston to Arcadia, or maybe New York to Arcadia. There’s lots of little coastal towns and cities, and you could stay close to water a lot of
the time.

Or as others have said, the Carolinas. They are on my list, but I’d probably choose to do those in shoulder season rather than August.

Canada to avoid trump? lovely lakes and swimming etc near Montreal.

Maine is also good for seaside (not many sandy beaches) or cape cod.

thanks so much for all the suggestions
I like idea of flying into Boston, visiting cape cod and then working our way up to Arcadia national park.

if anyone has any recommendations of where they stayed around these areas that would be so helpful! X

I've been to Maine three times in August and each time Cadillac Mountain has been fog bound. I do love Maine though and the fog brings a different other worldly experience. 🦞

I would avoid the US and do Nova Scotia, PEI and New Brunswick in Canada. Just the same vibe without the TACO influence. You can fly direct into Halifax NS from London

I'm afraid asking where on the East Coast you will find low humidity in August is like asking where in the Lakes it will be dry. Even in Maine, which although it will be cooler than areas further south, the humidity in August will be 70-80%.
If you want heat without humidity you need to head for the Southwest, e.g. Palm Springs. The heat will be topping 41-43° but the humidity will be 20-40%. Not my cup of tea (!) but that's what's on offer.

Avoid Florida in August like the plague. Humid, rainy, stormy and unpleasant. The average temperature around Miami is about 30° and it’s so humid if feels much hotter. Frequent downpours.

Your revised plan for the New England coast is much better.

Be wary of Florida at this time of year due to hurricanes.
