Madrid with teens!

WeWillAllGoTogether · 09/06/2025 20:02

We're thinking of a short break in Madrid for October half term. DC are late teens and we are all into culture, history and above all FOOD of all kinds.

None of us have ever been to Madrid before, so please hit me up with tips! For example, cool hotels, best places to eat, must-see sights, and is 2-3 nights enough?

Grand Via apartments are very central and very nice. Small roof top pool and bar. Bernabeu stadium. San Gines for hot choc and churros. El Abuelo for tapas. There's a place round the corner from there where everyone queues up for calamari baguettes - it's quite famous....Brunch at the Secret Garden of Salvador Bachiller - gorgeous roof top terrace. Free walking tour of historical centre. The hop on hop off bus tour is rubbish as you can see nothing of pedestrian areas, Royal Palace. Guernica. El Retiro park is lovely.

Brilliant tips, thank you! I've just had a look at the Gran Via apartments and they look amazing, location looks so convenient.

Yes - very close to the action. We had a 2 bed 2 bath with a huge terrace. It's come up on my FB memories of the day. We also went for drinks on the roof terrace at the Aloft hotel and had dinner on Plaza Mayor.

Visit the cloistered nuns to buy the cookies.
It is right next to San Miguel market which has amazing food also

WeWillAllGoTogether · 11/06/2025 15:45

Cookies and nuns? I'm in! Grin

@WeWillAllGoTogether, it is def worth a visit. If you have TikTok look them up. And as I mentioned it is right next to Mercado San Miguel which has a great selection of food and drink.
The one thing I would say is check the opening times for the nuns as they are only open 2 x a day I’m sure

soupyspoon · 11/06/2025 19:54

Had amazing food at all of the below, dont be put off by the one that looks like its within a block of flats, its the best one (well one of the best, apparently Spanish celebs go there).

I could go on, theres tons of markets too but I'd be here all night. We have gone to all of these several times over the years

Oh my goodness @soupyspoon thank you so much for all those recommendations! I am drooling now Grin

@AngelofIslington I've googled the nun cookies and it sounds like such an unusual experience, DC are going to love it!

Apart from the ones in Cuatro Caminos, you can walk to all of them, those two in Cuatro you can jump on the bus, I think its the 3, stops near them both. You can use metro but I like buses, but in reality we just walk everywhere.

I know Spanish tortilla is very cliche but Casa Dani in Salamanca makes it fresh and it is absolutely delicious. Most other places have it pre-made and so it’s kind of cooked all the way through iykwim. Casa Dani’s is velvety and just ‘runny’ enough.

tedlassoforprimeminister · 12/06/2025 06:52

Don’t forget the Bernabau tour. We went earlier this year and despite the building work is still worth it. They don’t tire of saying how many times they’ve won the champions league though!

Farah restaurant is my absolute favourite. It’s not strictly Spanish. The owner is Palestinian, and the food is amazing. The chocolate ice cream with sea salt and olive oil is to die for. You’ll need to book.

I agree you should also visit Mercado San Miguel, which is iconic. Very touristy, and a little, overpriced, but gorgeous.

Cava Baja is a popular little street with loads of tapas bars and restaurants.

I’ve lived here for a while and occasionally I still have a glass of wine in the Plaza Mayor. It’s the most incredible square, and yes, I’m paying over the odds but at €3.50, it’s still good wine. Spanish wine is very underrated imo.

Oops almost forgot revuelta. The bacalau (fried cod) is delicious.
