A few days in Boston

In a rare moment of adventurousness (is that a word?) I have decided to spend a few days in Boston en route to Fla.
My dad has recommended a few places, but I'd also be interested to hear what folks with kids would recommend in the city.
Ta muchly.

The aquarium is absolutley amazing, can also go on whale watching boat trips as well.

Second the aquarium, also you have to do a Duck tour - amphibious vehicle that goes in the river as well as on the streets.

Have only been without child, so don't know what is particularly good for them.

I really like Boston - was there 2 weeks ago, and each time I go I gorge on lobster as its so cheap and good

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 22/05/2008 18:04

Mmmmmmmm. Lobster.
My Mum told me about the Duck tour, it sounds fun. My sister has recommended Cambridge and Harvard. Haven't booked any hotel yet either, so suggestions gratefully received.

Nice restaurant called Legal Seafoods.
Chain across Boston but great tasty seafood

PuppyDogTails · 22/05/2008 18:09

Go watch the Red Sox if they are at home (and if you can get tickets!) It's a real all American experience.

Second Legal Seafoods and third the Duck Tour. I was actually disappointed by the aquarium, but that might have been because everyone had told me how good it was and got my expectations up - it was good but I didn't think it was amazing. Th USS Constitution and museum are good -- plenty of child-oriented activities in the museum.

If any of you happens to be named Isabella, you can get free entrance to the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, apparently .

I've stayed at the Holiday Inn by the common (not great, but I got it free on points), the Sheraton and Marriot Copley Place - all ok, and a good location.

I love Legal as they have a gluten free menu, so I made people eat there twice this trip. We also had a great meal at Mama Marias, which was a bit pricey though.

I stayed at the lenox hotel which is very close to newbury st, great for shopping.

Science museum is fab.

Legal Seafoods delicious.

Childhood museum, or whatever it is called, is rubbish. Likewise Cheers bar (although unlikely to go there with dcs, I guess).

Finagle a Bagel, if it stil exists, is fab for bagels in every flavour under the sun.

The freedom trail is great for seeing all the sights, there is a red brick or painted line on the pavement with a guide that you can buy at lots of places, gives you the background to lots of the culture and historial events.

Can't remember the name of it but the tower that belongs to one of the insurance firms is great, you can go to the very top for some fantastic views.

Parker House Omni is very central-- not too expensive if you book through one of those big hotel websites. How old are your kids? Even if none of you are called Isabella the Isabella Stewart Gardner museum is brilliant, a little out out of the way but very easy to get to on the T.

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 23/05/2008 09:13

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Am beginning to think 3 days won't be enough .
I will be returning at the end of my trip too, but only for one night.
I'm really excited about going!

Must agree the omni is great but the rooms can be small, it is the oldest hotel in america or something! very beautiful compared to modern hotels in boston.

If you stop there join the omni select guest programme before hand you then get drinks in the morning and free breakfast in the room well worth it and free

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 23/05/2008 12:54

I have booked the Omni for my one night when I return before flying back to the UK, as DH will be with us by then and it looks lovely. Thanks for the tips - I have also joined the select guest programme for the benefits. Ain't mumsnet grand?
