I’m off to France and looking for some travel insurance for us both Incase one of us gets ill. I can find lots of ‘family’ policies but wondered if anyone can recommend insurance for me and my child with no other adult?

I use Axa

AXA doesn’t even do travel insurance anymore for new customers apparently

Do a check on money saving expert. Unless you have preexisting conditions it's likely to suggest Coverwise. With preexisting conditions it's likely to suggest Staysure.

Remember to take your GHIC cards. GHIC doesn't cover things like repatriation, but for the kinds of problems that you are most likely to encounter (the press, egged on by the insurance industry, always loves to present the absolute worst catastrophes) it will work. For inpatient treatment in most hospitals you wouldn't see a bill. For outpatient treatment you pay and claim back, and there may be a bit to pay on top of what the GHIC reimburses, but if you can claim back the bulk via the GHIC then you're only at the mercy of the insurance company (and their never-ending quest to find pre-existing conditions) for a small percentage.

I can’t remember who with but in the past I’ve had family travel insurance as a single parent and it has been reasonable. I think I just got quotes for family insurance and it adjusted the price when you only put one adults details in.

I use Staysure for just myself and varying number of youngsters (one has a medical disclosure) depending the year. Oh and it was cheaper to buy an annual policy than one for a week so maybe check that out. Have a great time!

I've used Insureandgo for years. Also remember to order GHIC cards.

If neither of you have any complex health conditions or illnesses, any decent insurer you can find on a price comparison site will be fine.

Second the advice to get a GHIC.

Also pretty much every town in France has at least a couple of well stocked pharmacies that are very good for advice on minor injuries or health issues. You have to pay but usually only for the recommended medication.

Insureandgo + GHIC card

I use Nationwide flex plus account. It's £18/month and is underwritten by Aviva. I already had a flex (current) account so upgraded. The travel insurance covers you and your family members(s) for medical (do bring your GHIC though) and some travel problems (missed connections and such) and even covers family members if they are traveling without you. It also includes mobile phone insurance plus breakdown cover in the UK and Europe.

Oh so many good tips thank you! And the nationwide account sounds great. I took out annual cover with coop, the ratings were really good and covers delays and cancelled flight - was £50 (I signed up to be a coop member and got a discount) ! Will also double check about GHIC cards. I’m going on a few trips this year so it’s perfect thank you xxx
