When did you stop using your childs bike seat?? Is 2.5yrs too old? Dangerous?

Went to Halfords to get some "advice" but was served by a group of spotty kids hwo were busy discussing their social life to give me any help! Anyway, that shoukld be in AIBU!!

My DS is 2.5, and I want to be able to put him in a seat or trailer so I can safely ride with him and DS1 on his own bike who is 5 to school. Spotty kid suggested DS2 could ride his own bike to school with stabilsers, obviously didnt have kids! It would take hours to get there!

Is he going to be too heavy? He is asleep in bed and I did weight him today but now cant remember. I am sure older kids use the bike seats???

Anyone have any helpful advice??

TIA

The seat i had went upto 25kgs so even my 5 yr old could have gone in it but it has cracked for some reason so can't use it at all now.

PortAndLemon · 21/05/2008 21:45

We still put DS in a seat on the back of DH's bike and he is 3.4

chocolatespiders · 21/05/2008 21:47

my 4 year old goes in

you need to check the weight limit

harpomarx · 21/05/2008 21:47

big 3.5 year old rocks up to dd's nursery on the back of a bike, seems fine.

peasholme · 21/05/2008 21:47

That sounds bonkers. I cycle with a (fairly light) 4 year old using the same seat we've always had. I don't anticipate changing it for a year or two.
(btw, watch out, I've killed 2 threads tonight already)

peasholme, I'll rescue the thread (though will almost certainly kill it off, it's what I do). 3.5 year old dd goes in our bike seat no problem - can't see it being a problem for a while yet. at a 2.5 year old cycling to school on their own - Halfords staff not necessarily recruited for their razor sharp intellect, I think...

daisycat01 · 21/05/2008 21:51

I thought I had killed the thread just by starting it!!

Thanks for the help...I was sure the spotty kids was just trying to get rid of me so he could go back to being hormonal with the greasy girl!!

mmm I had visions of me cyling down the road and DS2 just flopping of to the side onto the floor and me not noticing!!

What make/model or where did you buy your seats???

Oh, thank you so much for the support! I have a list of other threads you can revive, if you like...

daisycat01 · 21/05/2008 21:55

ooops killed it!!

We bought ours from Evans the first time and our local cycle co-operative (oh yes indeed, it's cycle-tastic round here!) the second time - we've got a Co-Pilot taxi and another Co-Pilot one that is a bit fancier but does the same job.

cadelaide · 21/05/2008 21:56

daisycat,2.5 in a bike seat is fine IMO, but you get much better balance and control if you get a seat attached to the crossbar. LO sits in front of you with feet on little footrests, much much easier to control the bike.

daisycat01 · 21/05/2008 21:57

ooo cadelaide, I havent seen any of those!!

What age is your kid snickersnack??

DD stil in her seat at 4.5 but we are thinking of moving to a trailer bike this year as she is now getting to be quite a competant cyclist. Love the idea cycling along with a 5 year old and a 2.5 year old on their own bikes. Would be bad enough dealing with 2 on bikes while walking. possibly the lad in Halfords lives in cloud cukoo land.

FrayedKnot · 21/05/2008 21:59

I took DS on the back of my bike for the first time last summer, and he was a hefty 3 and a bit. He was fine but the hills were hard work! I also found it really difficult to manage the bike if I had to get off it (unfortunately all our local cycle routes have staggered barriers that you have to pass through to stop cars / motorbikes abusing them, so have to get off and walk bike through) .

The easiest way I found was to try and walk the bike through while still "mounted" over it iyswim!!

I am not going to try it with DS this year (he's now 4 and I think would have to put his legs over my shoulders as they are so long).

I reckon at 2.5 you have at least a year.

I got my seat on e-bay and have no idea what the weight limit is or even the make.

Sorry

snickersnack · 21/05/2008 22:05

She's 3.5 - it's a good point about it being a bit unstable at the back. It's fine once you're on, but it can be a bit of schlep (schlepp?) uphill and I'm more conscious than I used to be of the weight. Those front ones would be a lot more stable but they always look so small and unprotected sitting there...

daisycat01 · 21/05/2008 22:08

well I am bidding on some on Ebay so I wont be spending lots!
