Some different NYC recommendations

I'm very lucky to have had several holidays in New York as I have a relative there. I'm visiting again shortly and am looking for some new things to do, having done most of the touristy things once (and quite a few two or three times!). Things I've done include:

  • Empire state building
  • Top of the rock
  • Times square
  • Lots of walking around Central park
  • Lots of walking around lower and mid manhattan
  • Liberty island and Ellis island
  • The Met and the MoMa
  • The tenement museum, the transit museum, the natural history museum, the museum of the city of new york, the national museum of the american indian, the 9/11 museum, the new york public library
  • The highline
  • Brooklyn bridge and DUMBO
  • Coney island

As well as lots of food, some broadway shows and a baseball game, and quite a bit of time in Brooklyn as I have some friends there.

Can anyone give me any more recommendations? I'm aware there's some galleries I've not been to as they always seem to be closed when I plan to go! and I also haven't explored upper Manhattan much. I love museums, walking and food.

Thanks in advance Smile

What about a cable car trip to Roosevelt island? Nothing much to do once you are there but cool experience.

You could maybe go to Harlem, eat at Sylvia’s & find a cool jazz bar.

Haven’t been for a few years now but The Vessel at Hudson yards is on my list.

Or would you maybe spend some time in the Hampton? Or a small town upstate for a few days?

Things I really enjoyed that aren't on the list were a tour of the federal reserve, the hard hat tour at Ellis Island, the aerial tram, I did a few walking food tours, and the food market

  • The Frick Museum has just reopened after an extensive renovation. It will be crowded but it's a wonderful place.
  • The Morgan Library is a museum of printed treasures. Terrific permanent collection and excellent shows.
  • Neue Galerie is in a stunning building. Art of 20th C. Austria and Germany.
Also has terrific permanent collection and excellent shows. Smashing café albeit perpetually mobbed.

Ah the federal reserve tour is a good shout - completely forgot about that. I remember our tour guide saying every time you hear the ‘clink’ of gold bars being moved to think ‘$1.25’ as that how much they charged to move it. And you get a little gift at the end too!

New Yorker here. You've gotten some good ideas. Have you done the 9/11 museum? I'd also recommend the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum.

https://intrepidmuseum.org/

and the stage door tour at Radio City Music Hall

You get to see the workings of the theater, the costume rooms, stage props and you get to chat up a Rockette.

Happy to answer any questions.

Intrepid Museum

Experience the legendary aircraft carrier Intrepid, the first space shuttle Enterprise, and other pieces of history at the Intrepid Museum.

The Cloisters, in upper Manhattan are nice.

Do you like shopping?

HoldmecloseTonyDanza · 02/06/2025 23:43

I was going to recommend the Intrepid that pp linked above.
Also, have you done the High Line? Nice walk, I'm sure you've probably done that.

Whitney museum, Frick Collection and Guggenheim for museums/galleries. Go to Zabar’s on the UWS or the farmers market on Sundays (outside natural history museum), pick up a few bits and picnic in Central Park. Smorgasbord food market, Timeout food market.

When are you going? There’s always so much to do, I’m happy to suggest stuff if you’re coming in the next few weeks. I moved here last year and I’m still in my exploring phase so always on the lookout for cool things to do.

United Nations?
Agree Intrepid is fab

Also second 911 museum, The UN tour and Sunday church followed by Sylvia’s in Harlem.

Would also add:
The Apollo theatre tour Harlem,
The NBC tour (also you might want to try and get tickets for the audience for SNL?)
Breakfast at Tiffany’s
‘The Ride’ - musical theatre tour bus (great fun)
Grand central station tour

Adding some recs from my recent visit:
The Edge at Hudson Yards has good views. Book a table at Peak restaurant, spend $40 min pp for free access to the observation deck.
The public terrace at Time Out Market in DUMBO has amazing city and bridge views especially after dark.
For baseball, my preference is the Mets at CitiField, over Yankee Stadium. The $5 tickets are fine for the experience, and the 7 train from Grand Central stops right outside.
If you have a spare half day, ride the Metro North Hudson line for river views and Cold Spring or Beacon for the relaxed small town vibes.
UN tour is interesting.
Book the 9am slot for Liberty and Ellis Islands to avoid queues.
