Can we get food when we land at Schiphol Airport?

We’re flying into Schiphol Airport in July - does anyone know whether we’ll be able to get food when we land, before we head on? Does the arrivals area have somewhere?

Doesn’t matter what it is - a McDonald’s would be ideal as the kids can be picky, especially in a new place, so getting them something they’ll recognise would be handy!

I did, but I couldn’t find anything that specifically said which places were in Arrivals. I’m used to small airports where there’s only a vending machine once you land, which is why I wasn’t sure whether food in arrivals is even a thing!

They have the best vending machines ever! Frickandel and various other hot fast foods, mostly deep fried. It's one of the quirks of NL that I love!

CuriousGeorge80 · 02/06/2025 05:04

Taxis are easy, loads and loads. Just follow the signs.

It is a MASSIVE airport. I know somebody who missed their flight there as they hadn’t realised how huge the airport is.

sashh · 02/06/2025 05:38

You can buy a car or a diamond at Schiphol, I'm sure you can get some food.

For picky kids you can always get food at the vending machines. I don't mean ones like we have that sell chocolate or crisps, the ones in Amsterdam serve burgers and chips.

Have you ever seen a busy international airport??

No.

I’ve just come from there. There are absolutely loads of food and drink places as you exit departures plus an Albert Heijn supermarket.

AdaColeman · 02/06/2025 09:47

After you've eaten and shopped, get the train into the city centre rather than a taxi. You can then get a taxi from the station to your accommodation, which will probably be cheaper than a taxi from the airport.
Have a great time, Amsterdam is an amazing city.

BestIsWest · 02/06/2025 14:07

Depending on where your accommodation is the 397 bus might be a better option rather than the train. If you’re anywhere near the Rijksmuseum or Leidseplein it will definitely be easier. It leaves from stand B17 right by the taxi rank and costs less than €5 each. Obviously depends on how many you are and how much baggage but a taxi into the centre will cost at least 50€.

Thank you! We arrive at about midday. Our accommodation is about a 15 minute drive away, but we can’t check in until 4pm, so it makes more sense to get food in the airport and kill some time as well.

Why would you choose to spend 4 hours and pay inflated food prices in an airport?

Tbh it sounds like you haven't done much holiday planning,

NotjustCo2 · 02/06/2025 14:57

So you are landing and leaving the airport? Yes ALWAYS food as people returning home need bread and milk, dinner etc. Think what Gatwick is like

Because our flight got moved earlier than it was originally, and the accommodation doesn’t let us in until 4.

The pancake kitchen is Schipol is great, delicious pancakes and a decent cuppa

reluctantbrit · 02/06/2025 22:07

When you come out of the airport, you will find a huge plaza with shops, coffee shops, restaurants, fast food and a supermarket (one just with snacks/drinks but also a bigger one).

Needspaceforlego · 02/06/2025 22:13

Are you travelling onto somewhere else?
My best advice about Schipol is make sure you have a change in your hand luggage. We have travelled through it twice.
On the way there the 3 bags didn't make the connection.
On the return the one bag with a tracker was at the wrong end of the UK before we'd left Schipol!

MoveOnTheCards · 02/06/2025 22:35

Schipol is massive with loads of places to get food and drink but are you expecting checked baggage to go around the carousel for hours while you pass the time?

If I were you I’d get out of the airport and drop my bags off at the accommodation and get food near there.

I found cabs pricey in Amsterdam (relatively speaking) and the train from the airport into the city is super easy and quick. Also found that tram conductors around the city were really helpful and friendly.

MoveOnTheCards · 02/06/2025 22:37

We also had quite a queue for passport control and a long schlep to there from our arrival gate then again on to baggage and out. That took us nearly an hour and a half!

That’s a good tip, thanks! We’re going to our accommodation, which it says is about a 12-15 minute drive from the airport (though not towards the city centre, which is why we’re not planning to get a train in).

No, I’m assuming we’d go through some sort of passport control and then on to baggage reclaim, and have our bags with us when we go for food. Is that not sensible? We shouldn’t have too much luggage, and if needs be the kids and I can sit with it while DH goes to find food.

It doesn’t look like there’s anywhere really close to the accommodation to get food, and we reckon the kids will be hungry so making them wait while we find a taxi and then get to the accommodation, drop the bags off and find somewhere to eat is just going to delay things, which will lead to them being tired and grumpy. We figure we can let them eat while we figure out where to get a taxi etc.

It's a very short flight from the UK. If you eat before you go can you not wait to eat again before you get to your accomodation? Of course there will be food at the airport but you'll get better food out of it when you arrive

TheChosenTwo · 02/06/2025 22:53

Lots of choice there, very modern/fancy kind of airport (out of interest which airports only have vending machines in arrivals? I’ve never been in an airport remotely like this so I’m curious now 😂).
But rather than waste time sitting in an airport I’d have a conversation with the accommodation ahead of time - we’ve had this situation so many times across Europe and they’ve always been more than happy for us to leave bags with them before the check in time so we are free to go and explore without being weighed down by luggage. It’s worth an ask?

TartanMammy · 03/06/2025 08:20

Schipol airport is like a giant shopping mall. There's a big food court / shopping areas on the ground floor where the airport joins the station, it is honestly huge! Nothing like a small UK airport, it's bigger than Heathrow.

ZenNudist · 03/06/2025 08:31

I love Schipol. Thankfully always recovered my luggage no problem. Dead easy to get trains from so highly recommend doing this. Trains go in all directions!

We last went in April and was going to eat in airport but ended up getting food on the way to our accommodation which was lovely.

I was considering eating at the hilton on my return just because I like it and it's near to the car hire drop off point. I ended up eating air side as we were short of time.

If you are 15 mins from the airport there should be lots of restaurants to call in on the way to your accommodation. Nicer than sitting in the airport. Google maps is your friend. Plot the route you will travel then either search en route for restaurants or just zoom in.

Soontobe60 · 03/06/2025 08:45

Where are you flying in from? From Manchester, the flight time is just over an hour. So get to your departure airport early enough to eat there, or buy some of the delicious food on the plane, or take a meal deal on the plane to eat.
If you’re landing at 12, by the time you’ve taxied to your gate, which takes bloody ages, picked up your luggage, gone through customs it’s likely to be 2.

BestIsWest · 03/06/2025 09:03

If it’s KLM there won’t be food to buy on the plane but they will probably give you a sandwich and a drink. Likely to be cheese and honey mustard. I got lucky once and had a cake.

HerNameIsDebbie · 03/06/2025 09:18

Lots of food places, yes.
Not sure why people are being facetious.

Also there is a cheap, speedy and frequent train shuttle that goes right into the centre of the city, into Centraal Station which might be as easy if not easier than a taxi.

Jean24601Valjean · 03/06/2025 09:45

There are absolutely loads of food options both before and after security/baggage claim. The before options depend on which arrivals hall you come to but afterwards there is a supermarket (Albert Heijn), a Starbucks, a Leon, a Joe & the Juice, several small cafes... Probably others I've forgotten. Stuff after security/baggage is more grab and go whereas before it you have some more sit down options, but is more expensive.
