Malaga, Mijas, Fuengirola?

Hi all.

Heading to the Malaga area soon and looking for recommendations on where to go, what to see, over 4 days?

Will have one full day in Malaga, happy to jump on the bus/train down the coast. Is Marbella worth a trip?

I've been to Malaga once before and spent the day round the marina so any other must see areas to explore?

Don’t go down the coast; there are much better day trips by public transport. We’ve done the Alhambra in Grenada from Malaga. It needs to be booked ages in advance so if you can’t get tickets, the city itself is worth a visit. If you like walking, the Caminito del Rey is definitely worth the trip and doable by public transport. Malaga’s botanic garden is doable by bus and we went there twice because we enjoyed it so much. Amazing views.

Also, you can get coach trips to Ronda.

Marbella and Mijas are just full of British criminal types. Posers with lots of money.

Where would you go instead?

Nerja is lovely as is nearby Frigiliana

Ronda makes a good day trip. Granada (especially if you can get Alhambra tickets) is lovely. We’ve also done a couple of trips to Seville, but it’s a long drive and really merits an overnight stop.

A trip to Mijas is very quick and simple, and there are some amazing views. It’s just nice to get away from the coast for a few hours.

Ronda is nice, Mijas would be a nice place to go for dinner and a stroll, there are much nicer "white villages". Malaga town is wonderful and has loads to see, a castle, Roman ruins and Picasso as a starter.
I'd skip Fuengirola unless you are Irish and suffering from shock from not being in Dunnes Stores.

Malaga is a lovely city, we spent three days here (as part of a two week trip) and didn’t manage to see everything. On the first day we did a walking tour, which was really fun, informative and helped orientate us (alternately there is a “hop on hop off” bus with audio guide). We visited Alcazaba (Moorish fortress), the Picasso Museum (with audio guide), the Cathedral, Gibralfaro Castle, and Atarazanas Market. We didn’t do the Caminito del Rey as it was fully booked (but it does look amazing).

We also spent a day in Ronda with the incredibly picturesque Puente Nuevo bridge and another day in Marbella (and surrounding villages) - however, we did have a hire car. Marbella old town was lovely and it is a very lively/vibrant city.

Also love Fueringrola, lovely shops, tapas by the sea

Mija, quaint

Marbella...nah wouldnt bother

Nerja is gorgeous.

Thanks all, just in case it helps anyone we had a great time in Malaga, but unfortunately the trains were extremely crowded, hot and standing room only each time we used them so we did less travelling around than planned. Instead we did some coastal walks and beach days.

Was that the local coastal train or the intercity one? I would agree that the one that
goes up and down the coast is always overfull (and a nightmare at the airport
stop), as is the bus going up to Mijas, but when we’ve travelled on the intercity trains, they have been brilliant. We had designated seats with plenty of space, plus one of the trains had reclining seats and refreshments machine on board. It’s been very out of season when we’ve travelled -
so I’m just curious.

TutTutTutSigh · 11/06/2025 20:14

Yes it was the coastal train that stops at the airport. It didn't spoil our trip in any way, we hit the end of the heatwave so were more than happy to stroll and sit outside beach bars this time.

Seville is worth a visit.

Seville is worth a visit.

Seville is on the cards for September but the lack of direct flights from Manchester and Liverpool is a pain.
