Foot probably fractured in netherlands

WillIEverGoOnHoliday · 28/05/2025 06:39

Hi,

I'd appreciate some advice. I think my foot is fractured. My kid drove a Centerparcs mini car over it!

It feels numb and tingly since yesterday. It's ok if I'm still- just a bit uncomfortable but very odd to walk on.

Centerparcs suggest going to the hospital but usually have to wait around all day etc - with a toddler and kid. Is there a way to just manage this myself? Or would you definitely go to hospital?

I don't know if it might be something that sorts itself out. Cp cars are v heavy though.

You need to get it seen. Sorry.

notimeforregrets · 28/05/2025 07:03

Are you in the NL or the UK? If in the NL, you cannot just go to the hospital, you need an appointment. But first you'd be seen by a GP who will decide whether you need further investigation or not. Can you ask CP for a phone number of a doctor to call? They should have some in the area. Whereabouts are you? (I live in the NL). You need to call in the morning (I.e. now or asap)

ime dutch hospitals are very efficient. last time dc had a broken arm they were in and out in half an hour including plastering.
good luck, hope it's just a bruise.

ButterCrackers · 28/05/2025 07:05

Go to the A&E at the local hospital.

for acute injuries you can go directly to a&e (sh).

allamberedover · 28/05/2025 07:06

Wouldn't it be very swollen and unable to withstand any weight if it were broken?

Lemonsugarpancake · 28/05/2025 07:09

Definitely get it seen.

But fractured foot would not be an acute injury... I've always had to go through the GP here who then booked a slot at A&E and that's why it was efficient... (no waiting times and stuff). You definitely need to call ahead at least where I am. Maybe it's different in different parts of the country.

It can't bear weight. I think fractured most likely maybe minor fracture

I walked around for a month on a broken ankle because it was "just" painful and there was no obvious reason for it to be broken (i.e. no trauma). So no, it is quite possible for it to not be either of those things.

TokyoSushi · 28/05/2025 07:42

How much longer do you have there? How are you getting back? Is there another adult with you?

Perplexed20 · 28/05/2025 07:43

Are you on your own with your children? Are you dtivuhg? I do think you need to get it seen because then you can make some choices.

Is there any kids clubs the children could go to whilst you go to hospital? You would have to make the aware you are not on site.

allamberedover · 28/05/2025 07:44

Apologies OP if I seemed to be dismissive of your injury.
I agree , needs seen asap.

Mumof1andacat · 28/05/2025 07:47

Contact your holiday insurance company. They should be able to suggest a local hospital. Dutch health care is very good from what I know.

MoominUnderWater · 28/05/2025 07:52

If I could weight bear and wasn’t in too much pain I’d wait until I was back in the uk to be honest. But I’m a bit blasé over stuff like this so might not give the best advice.

MoominUnderWater · 28/05/2025 07:52

If you do go to hospital make sure you have your ghic card.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 28/05/2025 07:55

You need medical attention. Do not delay unduly and potentially make things worse by doing so.

I would also contact your travel insurance company and they will advise and liaise with the hospital.

Paaseitjes · 28/05/2025 08:01

Ask at reception which local doctor (huisarts) sees visitors. They will then refer you to the hospital where you should be seen quickly.

Edit: I just checked on my huisarts website. For broken bones you can go directly to A&E (spoedeisende hulp). I would still expect them to be fast compared to the uk

Clearinguptheclutter · 28/05/2025 11:05

Def get seen I’m sure Dutch healthcare will be better than UK
do you have a dp with you? I’d take insurance details and ghic and get him to drop you off and come back for you later

WillIEverGoOnHoliday · 28/05/2025 13:38

Thanks everyone. I phoned the hospital, they said go to GP first so centerparcs recommended a local one. They said no its not broken or fractured just bruised (judging by how it looked and prodding).

I think something is wrong with it but sounds like it can wait. I can walk on it now but get discomfort and tingling after a few mins so I'll see in a week or so.

GP was very good- seen the same day for 35 euros!

A newly fractured foot is.definitely an acute injury.

AllPlayedOut · 29/05/2025 01:10

You need an X-ray. Do not wait a week especially when you have tingling. The GP cannot tell if it’s broken or not without an X-ray. I had a bad accident(Arm not leg) I was in agony but no one thought it was broken, not paramedics, nurses or Drs at the hospital until they saw the X-ray. It was broken, very badly broken. It required surgery. My radial nerve had been crushed. I’ve suffered impairment and pain since. It took months and months of PT and hand and arm splints before I could move it again and it’ll never be the same again. Do not fuck around with possible nerve damage. Your mobility is priceless.

Not in the NL and at least not at my GP. (Admittedly, they're shit but I don't have a good opinion about Dutch health care anyway)
