Florida in July

We want to go to the states this year but I only have 2 weeks in July booked off. My teens 16 and 18 are really wanting to do USA but no idea where. I was thinking Florida parks and then out to keys or Clearwater but any other ideas gratefully recieved

Florida in July is hotter than Satan’s armpit and has very high humidity, which makes it feel so much worse.
The parks will be Hell to queue in, and the queues will be massive due to main summer hols.

From NomadSeason: July in Florida ushers in hot and humid weather, where temperatures can soar to a sweltering 35°C, with an average of 21°C keeping things warm. Rainfall is frequent, with approximately 6.9 in of precipitation occurring over 15 days, contributing to the state's lush landscapes. Humidity levels average around 66%.
Plus it's hurricane season.
Not my cup of tea, but everyone is different.

Are you open to other places in the States?

Summersoul · 24/05/2025 16:16

Any other reccomendations in the states that time of year?

We went in August and actually found it it
the worst was dressing for the heat all day then sitting in an air conditioned restaurant freezing to death on the way home

were going to Texas in June, sometimes you’ve just got to go with the flow

princesspadam · 24/05/2025 16:19

*ok

I wouldn't go to FL in July, it's far too hot and humid for me. However, millions of Brits DO go to FL in the summer and they survive. Theme parks can be bloody hot though. We went to Disneyland in Anaheim (just outside LA) last August for a day and the sun reflecting off all those hard surfaces made it pretty unbearable. I couldn't wait to leave!

Where is cooler? Well generally the west coast, particularly if you are actually on/near the coast. Lots of people do a fly/drive to California in the summer and while places inland are extremely hot (e.g. Yosemite NP, Palm Springs), if you stick to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Monterey, the PCH, Santa Barbara, LA, Orange County and San Diego (probably not all of those in only two weeks), then the temperature is much more manageable and it's not humid.

We went in July last year. It was very hot, but we survived and had a great time. The parks are well set up for the weather- just take plenty of breaks in the air con!

Forgottenmyphone · 24/05/2025 16:27

San Francisco, Yosemite and Los Angeles are doable in two weeks. July is gorgeous in Yosemite

ClaredeBear · 24/05/2025 16:33

We went to Florida twice in July, each time for three weeks, absolutely loved it. As adults you’ll be able to make the most of getting to the parks early and single rider queues. I personally wouldn’t hesitate to go again in July.

Have you considered Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire? The weather will be much more comfortable. It can get warm some years, but certainly not as bad as Florida. Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park will be busy in July, but it's a fab area. Lots of places in Vermont and New Hampshire as well.

2pence · 24/05/2025 16:36

A new theme park, Epic Universe, opened this month so the parks in Florida will be rammed! California might be a better bet if you want to take the teens to Disneyland, Universal and Six Flags but kids in USA are on Summer Break so you’ll queue wherever you go. End of August the USA kids are back in school if you can change dates though.

2pence · 24/05/2025 16:44

If you can’t change dates, would you consider Mexico? Playa del Carmen, not far from Cancun, has an amazing natural theme park in the jungle called Xcaret and there’s tons of stuff for teens around it. Would recommend booking Royal Level at Occidental Xcaret for a really special experience and you can get a discount if you join Occidental group’s free membership and book direct with them. We’ve been three times with teens and would go again at the drop of a hat.

hopeishere · 24/05/2025 16:58

We did NY (v v hot), Boston (cooler) and Cape Cod (fine). It was a good mix of busy and chill.

cyclingmum67 · 24/05/2025 20:18

Can't go wrong with San Diego - a 3/4 hour longer flight than Florida, but so much to do/see in and around there, and whilst still sunny and warm, very little humidity conpared to the east coast - which from experience is high all the way from Florida up to Boston

mathanxiety · 24/05/2025 22:46

I can't think of a place I'd hate more than Florida in July.

Maine would be fantastic.

Chicago would be nice too but completely different from Maine.

Labiabella · 24/05/2025 22:50

Florida is fine in July. Yes it's hot, but you're in and out of air con constantly and the parks are well set up for the heat.

Generally you get a good soaking from the afternoon thunderstorms to cool off, which makes it very humid, but again, air con.

Summersoul · 25/05/2025 09:32

Thanks guys we plan to just do a few days in orlando then possibly get out to the keys

If it’s theme parks that they want, the humidity would be less hideous in California.

Although I love Florida (in the winter), for the kind of holiday I think you want I’d fly into LA, do Disney and/or Universal and then road trip up the coast and fly out of San Francisco.

jeaux90 · 26/05/2025 14:27

Took our teens to Florida a couple of years ago. It was an amazing trip. Universal studios/volcano cove for 4 days. Coco beach and Space centre for two, then drove over to Everglades city where they absolutely loved the airboat ride, then up to Gulf Keys for a few days (best one for teens was siesta key)
