Pollensa, I like it, it's lovely, good for kids , it's not a spa break in mauritius but heh beggers can't be choosers and all that.

But forecast says it's going to be bloody raining for first two days. Any ideas / advice for good places to go if it's raining?

we went to the monastery at Lluc for a night when we were there in the rain last year. was a lot of fun - beautiful drive up there, very very cheap hostel type accommodation in monastic cells. this was with dss ages 2.5 and 10. amazing atmosphere and quite spooky at night which the boys loved. obv you need a car. prob about an hour from pollensa

katierocket · 20/05/2008 20:05

that sounds great thanks moopy. I do have a guide book somewhere but all our books are packed away from when we moved and i've not got around to digging them out.

Ha ha - i so sympathise with you. I was there last week and we had a few days rain.
Spent one day at the Palma acquarium (about 45 mins drive from Pollensa?) which the lo's loved (12mths and 18mths). Another day we mooched around the harbour at Cala D'Or. They've got a great cafe called Schooners which has lots of play stuff and nice grub so we hid there when the showers came. Hope the forecast improves

katierocket · 20/05/2008 20:07

It's just so depressing isn't it. I know it's a risk going at this time of the year but there's only so many times you can visit the playmobil shop at puerto pollensa.
Thanks funkypea (love the name BTW), good suggestions.

Oh, PS - we went w friends so one of the lo's isn't mine (otherwise the maths doesn't work does it!)

thefunkypea · 20/05/2008 20:10

And on a positive note, when it stopped raining we spent a day at the Acquapark in S'arenal (also near Palma) and it couldn't have been more than 10% full, which I thought was a very good reason for going in May

mumto2andnomore · 20/05/2008 20:11

There is a soft play place in Puerto Pollensa, never been but ive seen it advertised.

katierocket · 20/05/2008 20:16

yes aquapark looks potentially interesting. DS1 is 6 so perfect for him, DS2 is 15 months, so maybe less so.
LOL at you having a 12 month and 18 month - you go girl.

Coves del Drac in Porto Cristo (underground cave system)
Plenty of galleries in Pollenca
Morning at Es Baluard in Palma
Cinema? there is one in Pollenca that closes for the holidays, or because is hot, but so far I haven't heard of them clossing because of rain.
Lluc is an excellent idea, not sure about doing the drive with heavy rain but a shower here and there should be fine.

Vivace · 20/05/2008 20:22

Are you self-catering or hotel?

katierocket · 20/05/2008 20:29

we've got a villa.
Love the idea of the caves, they sound great.
Es Baluard might be a bit dull for the LOs? although DP and I would love it.
Does anyone know what kind of cafes they have at Aqualand? is it just standard chicken nuggets fare {sigh}?

OP posts:
thefunkypea · 20/05/2008 20:35

Food at Acqualand is standard-ish chicken nuggets type stuff - we had pizzas (although they were woodfired if that makes a difference!) and baguettes. There is an Acqua park in Alcudia - we didn't go there cos it would have been further for us, but probably much handier for you.

I went to the Coves del Drac a few years ago and they were fab

katierocket · 20/05/2008 21:54

ooo yes woodfired makes it much more acceptable
Still wish the forecast was 30C and boiling hot.

A drive around the Tramuntana would be lovely too. Passing through Deia, Valldemosa (have a look at Sa Cartuja, and don't forget to try the Cocas de Patata in one of the nearby cafes), and arriving at Banyalbuffar.

There is a lovely road worth seeing (it is used at many sport car adverts) I don't remember the name but is the one that takes you to the Torrent de Pareis.

MeMySonAndI · 21/05/2008 07:46

And just thinking of this... I'm sure the children would love a ride in the old tram that goes from Port de Soller to Soller. And maybe going to Palma using the old wooden train that leaves from Soller Station.

If you take the train, it arrives straight into Plaza Espanya, which is the centre of authentic Palma life (1916, El Mon or the nearby Cappuccino are real citadins' favourites. Cappuccino is LOVELY, has enough space for the children to wander around and it is a nice space where you can have a coffee with students on one side and the Spanish prince sitting at the next table).

AbbeyA · 21/05/2008 07:51

The train ride is a good idea and then the tram. It is a long time since I have been but I think you can see dolphins at Marineland near Palma (I may have the name wrong).

cardy · 21/05/2008 09:35

The train from Palma to Soller is really beautiful (DS might find it exciting). There is a soft play area in Pollensa, but we've never been so I don't know what it's like. The monastery is worth the trip whatever the weather. The caves were good when I went....but that was on a family holiday about 25 years ago.

It rained when we were in Pollensa two years ago but was quite warm....didn't stop dd going in the sea and pool.

I would aviod the aqua park at Alcudia...don't want to mix with the rif raf during half term

katierocket · 22/05/2008 18:36

train sounds good. I suspect the difficulty will be finding something that DS1 likes (6 yrs) that DS2 (15 months) can also do.

I'm on my knees praying for a weather reversal.
