Typical cost of flights to Canaries over New Year

Advice welcomed from those of you who head away for winter sun!

We are doing this for the first time and are tracking the fights for 26th Dec-2nd Jan'26.

At the moment, before luggage, they are coming in at ~£2600 rtn for Lanzarote for 4 adults from a Northern UK airport (Ryanair).

Is this about right (seems expensive!?) or should I sit tight?

Does it have to be those dates? You could reduce the cost significantly by going a day or two either side.

Have you minimised luggage? Also, if you look at Jet2, the flight prices might look more expensive, but you get 2 cabin bags as standard and hold cases might be cheaper, so could be cheaper overall. But can you get away with less luggage, eg 2 hold cases between 4?

Different airport? We always look at Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester or East Midlands, in that order.

Would a package be cheaper? We've had Jet2holidays packages that have worked out less than booking the same flight and accommodation separately, before adding on the cost of luggage and transfers.

No idea if it will get cheaper closer to the day, but those prices suggest that it's a peak time to travel and people who want those holidays tend to book very early and it's rare to get significantly cheaper closer to the time.

Agreed.

I had a look at Canaries over that time of year, even looking a full year before departure they were coming out at a ludicrous amount. If you play around with the dates you may get it down a few hundred. They don’t tend to reduce nearer the time either.

rookiemere · 20/05/2025 09:40

Actually I misread I thought it was £2600 per person. For four for those dates that’s honestly not that bad and it’s unlikely to get cheaper.

TeamGeriatric · 20/05/2025 10:55

So that's £650 / person, for flight only seems high to me, check all other options before booking.

MiddleAgedDread · 20/05/2025 11:32

I've seen someone ask about this on the Club la Santa facebook group (it's a sports resort in Lanzarote) and the prices over Christmas / New Year were really high when she was looking months ago. Prices on budget airlines rarely come down so i think that's the best you'll get if you book now. It's expensive but that's what it is! Flexing your dates could save you a lot of money (I'm looking at RyanAir from Manchester)

Not much use to someone in northern UK but by way of comparison BA are currently selling LGW- ACE return (leave UK 26th Dec return 2 jan).for £685 return, per person, checked bag included.

As a pp identified one thing that elevates the price is the days chosen for travel.

Flights ex UK just after Christmas have always tended to be busy, as have flights into the UK just post New Year.

princesspadam · 20/05/2025 12:11

We always go at new year (usually Fuerteventura)
flights are v expensive at that time
we normally pay anywhere between £400-£600pp

Thanks everyone, this has been very useful. Sounds like they are about right price-wise then. We have no flexibility re dates - hosting Xmas and must be back for school term. Can't be faffed travelling to another airport (we are only 20mins from ours) which is a godsend. We will add 10kg cabin bag each to this so probably a few hundred pounds more.

Ooh, they've come down this week. 2K ish now!?

Snap them up.

I went to Lanzarote over Christmas/NY three years in a row when I lived in the UK. It’s the perfect short haul winter sun break.

Let me know if you need recommendations of where to eat.

FrenchandSaunders · 19/06/2025 13:41

Do you have accommodation sorted?

If not a package holiday might work out cheaper. We went to Adeje in Tenerife for NY last year and paid about £1K each in a nice hotel inc flights, half board.

It was so lovely to get away at that time of the year, first time we've done it and we're hoping to do the same every year. The only thing I wouldn't do is return on that Sat before school/work restarts ... the airport was hellish, queued for hours to drop bags, then hours again for passport control.
