Stockholm city break tips

Dear collective wisdom of MN,

I am reaching burnout and have a work trip to Stockholm coming up that I was able to tack on a weekend to for myself. I have a hotel booked in the city centre (which has a pool so I will spend some time there!).

But between work being too busy, I don’t and won’t have time to plan much or research what to do until I am en route. I know I need to get a train from the airport to city, and that the whole trip will be expensive. I travel in June.

but are there any tips for visiting. - places to see, good places to eat, advice for solo travellers there (some cities are easier than others), etc?

thanks all,
Biddy

The old city is lovely for a potter and nice restaurants.

Drottingham Palace
Skansen (open air museum)
Vasa Museum (old sailing ship)
Abba museum (if you're into them!)
One of the many boat trips up the archipelago (best thing to do IMHO!)

Apols - Drottningholm Palace! (It's a short boat trip from the quay in the centre)

Second Skansen and Vasa Museum.
Coffee shops are lovely to spend an hour in.
Wander round Gamla Stan

I've just come back from a weekend in Stockholm and had a great time. I was staying with a friend so costs were less and yes it is an expensive city but for coffee etc I didn't find it more expensive than London prices now. It's a very walkable city, the old city is lovely to wander around, I went to the Nobel prize museum which is quite small but very well done and interesting.

It's very easy to get from the airport into town on the Arlanda express. You can buy tickets on the platform or in advance from their website. The minute you step out into arrivals there are huge yellow arrows on the floor leading down to the train platform. The trains are very regular and efficient, apparently if a train is even a minute late arriving into the city you get your entire fare refunded! Don't know if I would want to put that one to the test though, even if I was on a delayed train.

The Vasa museum would be my top recommendation. Stunning. Also a lovely, peaceful place to spend time in.

Fotografiska Museum is cool and especially nice is the rooftop bar - lovely on a warm sunny day or at sunset.

All of this. It’s pretty much what we did when we were there. The palace is a lovely boat ride away.

Skansen is great. An outdoor museum, with zoo and aquarium. Gamla Stan is lovely to walk around. Take in an Ice Hockey game as the World Championships are on although may have ended depending on day in June you head out. Walk around the Djurgården, and have tea at Rosendals Trädgård.

Thank you all so much for these! Cheered me right up as I came out of an unexpected meeting this afternoon😀

Agree with Vasa and a boat trip into the archipelago / Drottningholm.

I think skansen is more of a kids place.

NK is a good department store (high end) with lots of regional brands you won’t see here.

Thanks all - I did a lot of walking but the heat was unexpected so I did a fair bit of shopping for air con and also that Sweden has a wide range of sixes compared to where I live (I was just about within weight limits for my case on return).

I explored the old town and the rooftop bars. I enjoyed coffee and my book on the street corners. I swam at my hotel. And I noted a lot of things to do when (not if) I go back and to bring DH along to.

but it was great and so good to have the recommendations thank you all! Because I think I just needed to slow down more than anything …and doing 20,000 steps a day but with no demands on me, really hit that brief!
