12.5 weeks old… Bad mom?

My partner really wants to go on holiday at the start of July but my little boy will be 12 and a half weeks when we leave. Are we being bad parents if we take him away? It would be for a week short haul and no where too hot. My concern is more the aeroplane and how many germs are spread on flights. An I paranoid or is it risky? I don’t want to make him really poorly but also I know lots of babies that have been away at 3 months old?
not sure how I feel!

Take him on holiday!

Being sat on a plane isn’t that much different to him being in a cafe

Def go and take him

its harder work taking a baby than just going as a couple BUT its much harder still once babies are mobile etc to take advantage while he’s still tiny

I would def not be unduly worried about germs on planes. Make sure you have decent travel insurance in case he is ill while you’re away that’s al

One thing you will want to go a move on with his passport. Apply in next few days and you’ll be fine

titchy · 16/05/2025 12:32

Can’t you wait till he’s had his full lot of jabs at 16 weeks? Maybe early September?

Babies are sooo much easier to take on holiday than toddlers!

Bobbyelvis4ever · 16/05/2025 14:10

Have a brilliant time - babes in arms are the easiest children to travel with

TeamGeriatric · 16/05/2025 14:12

I flew with mine when they were younger than that, it will be a lovely holiday.

JellyAnd · 16/05/2025 14:23

It’ll likely be the easiest it’ll be until you get emerge out the other side of the toddler years but then it’ll be much more expensive as they’ll need their own seat on the plane, bed in the hotel, meals at restaurants etc. It’s a great age to go away with IMO. There’s no need to worry about what they will/won’t eat. They’re not mobile yet so keeping them sat still on the plane is a non issue. You don’t need to plan around kid activities to keep them amused. A standard hotel room with a travel cot will work for you all. Etc. Take full advantage and travel as much as you can would be my advice! Take some antibac wipes to wipe down your plane seat if you’re worried about germs but I don’t see how it’s any worse than a bus or train which you probably wouldn’t think twice about.

Assuming it's a close European neighbour with a decent healthcare system and baby has had first set of vaccinations I'd see little issue with it unless it's going to be insanely hot with no air con.
If it is if you are breastfeeding you'll need to be careful of the sun obviously but also dehydration. If bottle feeding you need to check you are using low sodium bottled water. There is a baby symbol on the bottle in Spain, can't speak for other countries.

What? Why would you be bad parents? Of course take your baby away. There are some hotels in Europe that will look after babies in kids clubs from 4 months old (paid extra for babysitting while in kids clubs).

Naomival · 16/05/2025 14:58

We went on holiday when my dd was 4 months old and it was the easiest holiday we had, she slept a lot by the pool with a fan on her! Def go!

EdgarAllenRaven · 17/05/2025 22:29

We took ours after the 16 week vaccinations and it was a great time to travel! They can’t really move, they’re not on solids yet, and still sleep a lot (naps were my swimming/sunbathing time).

monkeyboy2013 · 18/05/2025 07:17

Go. The benefits of a holiday far outweigh the risks in this situation. As long as baby has vaccinations up to date, it should be fine. Even safer if you breastfed initially and passed on some of your own immunity. I wouldn't hesitate. Happy parents equals happy kids.

faerietales · 18/05/2025 07:24

Go! That’s probably the best time to take a baby - so portable.

biscuitcat · 18/05/2025 07:27

My top tip to all new parents is always try and go on a trip while the baby isn’t yet moving or eating solids and doesn’t really need entertaining - it’s definitely the easiest time to go! Obviously little babies are hard work, but it’s much the same wherever you are as they’re not so discombobulated by being in a new place with a different routine as a toddler. We just got back from a trip and our youngest is 2 months - the big two were much harder work than him.
