Travel insurance when awaiting medical results

Hi there

I am hoping someone can offer advice, my husband, 13 year old daughter and myself are going on holiday to Barcelona on Monday 26 May whilst she’s on half term holiday. I sorted travel insurance when we booked the holiday several months ago. Unfortunately a couple of weeks ago my husband started struggling with hip, back and knee pain and went to the GP who arranged bloods, he also gave a stool and urine sample. Blood has been found in the stool sample and his prostate levels are raised too, he has to go for a colonoscopy but this isn’t likely to be before we go away. My husband still wants to go away, but I checked the insurance policy and it says they won’t cover undiagnosed conditions. I’ve looked on the internet at a company that covers pre-existing conditions but they also say they don’t cover undiagnosed conditions. Can anyone recommend a company who does please, I’m very worried about him.

Thank you

J.

I have used Brokersure. 0330 880 3605. They have a different screen that they use. They take you through existing then undiagnosed conditions. Then they pass it to the underwriter and phone you back with the policy that has been authorised.

DH and I both have undiagnosed conditions and we were covered the same day.

@Lougle thank you I will look into this

Try insurancewith, I’ve found them the best previously for covering pre-existing medical conditions at a semi-reasonable price least so worth calling them. Awaiting medical tests for a possible undiagnosed condition is a difficult situation though and you may find it impossible to get cover from anywhere due to this sadly.

I dont think you’ll get cover for an undiagnosed condition in my experience. You could try Staysure? What are they thinking it might be? If it’s short break you could take your chances and bring your GHIC cards which will provide emergency cover as well as your normal insurance policy.

Have you updated your current insurer with the situation? Your insurance is in place, if you choose to you could cancel and claim with them. Then go away once you have completed investigations. Unless you update them your insurance will be invalid for the trip

I would check with your current insurer. Although they don't cover undiagnosed conditions this is slightly different as you already had the insurance in place when the symptoms started IFSWIM

SummerFeverVenice · 17/05/2025 08:21

I use Allclear,

I don’t know anyone who covers undiagnosed conditions. You have to inform them of investigations ongoing so that if something happens while on holiday directly related to the undiagnosed condition under investigation, then they know and you know it is excluded from coverage.

Eg, I was waiting for breast biopsies after a dodgy mammogram when I went on holiday. So my travel insurance excluded anything arising from that breast investigation, but still covered me for everything else.

Came back, and was later diagnosed with breast cancer.

Riverswimmers · 17/05/2025 08:24

It will just be that they won't cover for that condition. Just call them and take you GHIC card. I'd be relaxed about going tonSpain like this - the US or outside Europe not so much.

MissCharlotteLutterell · 17/05/2025 08:27

Contact your existing insurance. This is why you have the insurance...! Let them know the situation and see what they say. If it's all new since after you bought the insurance then it wasn't pre-existing on that insurance so you'd hope would be covered.
You only need a new insurer if your current one pulls their cover, which would be pretty nasty (but I haven't been in your position so don't know if they would).

aintnospringchicken · 17/05/2025 15:43

Phone your insurance company.
I’m in a similar predicament where I’ve been referred to the hospital for further investigation.
My insurance policy states
“We won’t cover any claim arising directly or indirectly from any undiagnosed health problem or symptom for which a diagnosis has been sought but not yet received that the insured person was aware of
Before opening an account
Before booking a trip( if symptoms began after you have taken out a pre existing upgrade, cover
will be in place until upgrade expires)
Before adding a pre existing conditions upgrade.

I have already add pre-existing conditions to my policy and recent symptoms only started a couple of weeks ago which is several months after I booked my trip.
I have an annual travel insurance policy.

Thanks everyone, I rang my insurance company and they said this is fine and have noted all new information. However she stressed the importance of getting gp to confirm he is fit to travel / fly and that if gp says he isn’t fit to fly we won’t be insured. My husband rang gp surgery and was told this could take up to 28 days and I’m feeling more stressed than ever now as we fly on Monday!
Not sure what to do…

Can another doctor certify this? It might be a rare occasion for buying a quick appointment with a doctor who isn't the usual GP, if the insurer would accept that.

Josie1968 · 21/05/2025 20:13

I’ll ask thank you. It might be an option. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately no GP’s available at our surgery today or tomorrow who can do fit to fly letters. They suggested we look for a private doctor who can do this. Is anyone aware of anywhere we can go for this please even if this is online? Thank you.

Google your local private hospital

May I ask how you managed to sort it?

GoldLash · 26/05/2025 07:02

Luckily you’ll be in Europe so I personally wouldn't worry too much about going.

I would be worried however if I were travelling to another continent.

@RusticChill a message was sent to husbands GP presumably by the receptionist I spoke to and he managed to sort it for us … I was so grateful for the help of our GP surgery. We had a lovely holiday.
