Rome - family holiday?

We have a week's beach holiday booked in spain booked late August but now we all quite fancy Italy and particularly Rome.
Is it a bad idea? Too hot? Too busy?
A week Too much given it's usually a city break?
Would we be better staying elsewhere and travelling in? Splitting up time across different locations? Or reducing time there generally and then freeing up leave for later in year.

I've been considering rome without kids for years so not considered whether it would work for them at 13 and 8 but they've been youtubing and both say it's what they want

Thanks for any insight

@planthelpadvice please can I ask where you stayed and how you travelled into the city. This is something I'd love to do with my family. Thanks

We stayed here Fabulous Village (the name makes me laugh every time - such confidence!!)

It was a really nice site although entertainment was loud and went on late - try to get a place further away from the stage area!!

We had a car so we drove to a metro station, but you didn't actually need one as there was a bus from right outside the site that went either into Rome or to a metro station. The metro was clean, quick and cheap. Lots of people arrived to the site from the airport by taxi so you could definitely do it without a car.

Halfway between Rome center and the sea of Ostia, Fabulous village campsite is ideal for visiting the capital of Italy and enjoying your holidays among the green pine trees of the Roman coast!

Rome is amazingly beautiful and rich in culture but there is absolutely no chance in hell I'd be going in August. The heat is unbearable, it's smothering, really. The crowds are insane, the prices are so so steep and it really is not enjoyable. 40 degrees next to a pool/by the beach is manageable, walking through a stoney oven with millions of other people, not so much! I'd suggest going in May or perhaps October half term. Honestly it will dampen your experience if you go in summer with kids who are hot, tired of waiting and fed up with being bumped into every second... Even as an adult it's exhausting.
I really hope you do get to go, just pick a better time of the year so you get the most enjoyment out of your holiday! ☺️

I went in March and it was 21, went in June and it was 41, absolutely unbearable and I took nothing in

I would never go to Rome in August! I have lived in Italy and it is unbearable in August in all cities.
I last went in April. It was lovely.

We spent a week at Fabulous Village in August and had an amazing time. Great balance of chill pool days vs city days. Yes it was hot but it wasn’t unbearable, actually pretty blissful if I’m honest!

We didn’t have a car so we got the local bus (stop near the park entrance) to the metro station, all very easy. You can also get the bus to a local shopping mall for an alternative change of scenery (and bit of midday air con!).

My kids were 5 and 8 at the time. We did all the main sites. Yes it was hot and yes it was busy but returning to the super relaxed campsite at the end of the day was the perfect antidote.

it’s one of the loveliest holidays we’ve ever had 😊

Rome is lovely but an oven in August. How are you with 40 degrees celcius?

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 15/05/2025 23:35

I’ve previously been in early September in 30 degrees and it wasn’t too bad, I found.

OohBurnDavid · 15/05/2025 23:43

I took dd last October and we enjoyed it. We did lots of sightseeing and it was perfect weather to walk/explore. I would avoid 2025 as it’s the jubilee so millions of pilgrims are expected.

if you are going to Italy in August I’d highly recommend Puglia or Lake Garda.

I went with my son (7) and DS in August. It's cheap and quiet as Romans are all on holiday elsewhere.
It's boiling BUT you go out in the morning and early evening. Feels like a holiday having an afternoon nap ( I went sunbathing on the terrace because I love heat).

Just back from 4 days in Rome. The temperature was 24 degrees but it felt much hotter. Rome is very busy at the moment due to it being a Jubilee year plus the new Pope. Everywhere was rammed which made getting around difficult.
