Urgent! Travelling with 4months and 10 days left on child passport

So let me paint the picture!
i have done all my research, but need I think to make a final decision based on my options ( there are not many)

I have booked flights. For a family of 5 2 adults and 3 children, Through a booking agency. I did not pay for flexi ( was over confident that I had checked everything over and would not need to at any point change my flights, was I wrong!) I had this urge of anxiety rush over me this morning and was like wait my little one turned 5 recently I must check her passport validity.. 4 months and 10 days left on it! We are going to Thailand we go every year for 3.5 weeks! And my mom is a Thai citizen and has a home there! My worry is the airline noticing! Even though I’m almost sure with her passport being one of 5 for them to look at it could get overlooked .. but then again I have never flown with Qatar before.

my options are to renew her passport in time .. we fly in 5 days so this isn’t happening. Second one is to change mine and her flight if it’s not another arm and leg.. again will see if it’s affordable. But if not I’m going to just have to go for it! Has anyone experienced this before? Talk to me!!

This was my worry!!! So there is technology involved and not just humans! I have decided and managed to get an appointment for tomorrow! Hopefully the officer is extra nice and can fast track it somehow! I have heard they can make the process that little bit faster !!!

Contact the passport office and ask what they advise. Sounds like some people on here have had success in getting a renewal quickly.
I don’t think just risking is an option.
You’re going to need to be prepared for possibly having to rebook!

I hate this rule about having 6 months validity on a passport. What’s the point of a passport expiring July if you can’t travel on it in January? It might as well expire in January!

Imagine you had a serious accident and spent months in the hospital then had to sort out an expired passport to get home..,my colleagues husband needed and emergent operation in Lanzarote, he was in hospital abroad for 6 weeks.

Ilovemyshed · 15/05/2025 16:35

You have to renew.

Gothamcity · 15/05/2025 16:40

We just went to Thailand, checked with airline at xmas, as my daughters would have gone just under the 6 months remaining the day or so before we were due to go, and they said they wouldn't let us board if it was under 6 months, so we renewed hers and effectively "lost" the 6 months that was left on it.

legsekeven · 15/05/2025 17:02

Good luck op. You just prompted me to double check everyone’s passports

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 15/05/2025 17:24

I would get a fast track passport appointment. I just got both my kids new passports and they were back with in less than 2 weeks. Xx

cockadoodledandy · 15/05/2025 17:41

As other have said, the customs law for Thailand is 6m. You should have checked.

Cognacsoft · 15/05/2025 17:55

If you use Apple devices, android maybe the same, you can set yourself a reminder for 4.years and 5 months time to renew passport.

Yes, basically passports are 4.5 or 9.5 years .... ridiculous. Its either valid or not. If it covers your trip what is the problem?

But that's exceptional circumstances and your consulate should help you out, like they do if your passport is lost/stolen when you're abroad.

No, they aren't. You haven't understood at all.

It’s still a lot of stress that isn’t needed if you have valid documents.

You can't dictate what regulations another country puts on British passport holders entering their country. If they want to protect themselves from people accidentally staying past the expiry date they can do. Just holiday somewhere that doesn't have those rules.

I recently went through this. Booked the fast track 1 week service for kids renewal. It arrived after 4 days (including weekend) so very quick, but you’ll definitely need to rebook

I got an in person appointment the same day that I realised my child’s passport had expired. They don’t do same day passports for children but it arrived 5 days later.

Same, I took my son in December when I realised he needed 6 months left to travel to UAE - it literally arrived 2 days later. I wouldn’t risk that they won’t notice.

SapporoBaby · 16/05/2025 05:40

They will not overlook it. Passport controls are extremely strict now. You’ll need to change the flights as they won’t let you on.

You’ll be turned around at the airport.

Alexandds · 16/05/2025 06:27

We fast tracked my DS passport last year and it arrived within 2 or 3 days I was really surprised. Hopefully it arrives before your flight

Whyherewego · 16/05/2025 06:31

I got into Borneo with a similar position. I stressed the entire flight and they didn't even look at my DS passport! I put it at the bottom of the pile so they'd stamped all the others first !

Thank you! We have an appointment today with the passport office ! Thank you decided NOT to risk it x

Just found this and making my way through the first thread as there's loads of great information. We're thinking about visiting Japan next Easter and one thing we've found is an MSC cruise visiting several places in Japan. Has anyone done this before and would you recommend it? We're limited to 2wks due to school holidays so trying to work out the best way to get the most out of the trip. We'd ideally spend 3-4 days before the cruise in Tokyo depending on flights

Uphighseesky · 17/05/2025 16:07

@endofstory wrong thread?
