I am struck with inertia re where to go

Last two weeks of October free and don’t know where to go . I have thoughts on Canada , Japan but not sure 2 weeks is long enough and maybe too cold . I’m wanting warmth / dry weather , a mix of relaxing and sightseeing. Assuming long haul at that time of year . Any suggestions gratefully received . I’ve done Thailand / India / Caribbean and would prefer to explore somewhere different.

If you're after warmth not Canada in late October.

Southern US would be warmer.

MoosakaWithFries · 12/05/2025 12:07

As previous poster has said, Canada will not give you warmth.

If you're happy to travel to the US, how about a road trip in Arizona?

We went to Japan in late October and it was brilliant. Not sunbathing-warm but you don't go to Japan to sunbathe.

I haven't been myself but New Orleans during Halloween would be pretty special to see.

Ditto: Salem, Massachusetts.

Depends if you can tolerate the tourist mayhem!

TizerorFizz · 12/05/2025 21:59

I bet you haven’t “done” India or the Caribbean! Have you been to Southern India? What about Nepal or Bhutan?

The Caribbean - October is a bit early but have you been to BVIs? What about Bequia? Or the Grenadines? You could look at South Africa. Virtually no time difference. Plenty to see and do. Also Namibia might appeal. Ditto Kenya and Tanzania.

There’s a lot of South America that’s good in late October. Definitely Argentina and Brazil. Chile probably too. Japan is great then. Vietnam? All are long flight times though.

American south? Lots of cities and things to see. Agee that Arizona and Utah would be very pleasant too.

Thanks everyone , lots to consider .

How lovely with two weeks of October free!

I would love to travel to Canada, but if it's October and you want warmth and dry weather it might not be the best option. Any Canadians here that can chime in?

Lots of good advice from previous posters.

TizerorFizz · 12/05/2025 23:18

It’s obviously late autumn and heading towards winter in Canada. It’s fairly obvious it’s not warm at the end of October and might well be wet. So many other places will be better in late October.

Incase you would consider a closer destination, Morocco would be a great choice at that time of year.

Haha I’ve just come back from Morocco, didn’t love it if I’m honest .

We have been to Jordan and Oman at that time. Egypt also great.

Frankly loads of places are.

Oriunda · 13/05/2025 16:23

We always take our long haul holiday in October; usually good weather most places. We have visited: Singapore/Bintan, Thailand/HK, Florida, California (guaranteed good weather at these). Mixed weather: China (warm in Shanghai, jacket and jeans in Beijing); Japan (Kyoto was warmer, plus the onsens are great in Hakone, and I reckon Okinawa might be warmest).

We’ve also been to Morocco then, but I see you’re not keen.

Finally, and less chance of proper sun, but southern Italy can be warm enough to swim. We’re from Puglia, and I’ve swum there during October half term. You’d want to be in Sicily, Calabria or Puglia for the best chance of warmth. Or of course, Greece.

Thankyou so much , I think I’ve pretty much decided on Japan so now need to plan an itinerary.

@hattie43 loads on the travel board! Flights might now be expensive though. Japan is very popular now. So get moving is my advice!

South Africa? Cape Town. Lovely time of year there as it’s spring. We’re going in a week and it’ll be heading into winter but the weather is a bit like it is here at the moment so not bad! Beautiful city and lots to see and do 😊

TizerorFizz · 14/05/2025 11:13

I love South Africa and it’s good value too.

Regarding Japan : we did Tokyo, Hakone (not the best bit in my view), Matsumoto and then Tsumago. On to Kyoto and Nara. Then Osaka snd home. Some go on to Hiroshima. We didn’t as we stayed longer around Kyoto because it’s 100% fantastic! Have fun planning and try and look at Lonely Planet and Japan by rail books. Best planning guides. Use post serving to forward luggage. Bliss! Use the railways - super efficient.
