Can anyone suggest where I could take a 16 year old (rest of family staying home), for a week / 8 nights mid / late May? I'd hoped for an easy week away package holiday in the sun but instead they fancy sightseeing with a city / castle to see / history.

My initial thought had been flying to say a Eurocamp and basing myself there and going out for day trips / having the occasional day at the pool. Any accumulation considered at reasonable price and twin room doable too.

Main criteria is we can access the campsite / location (doesn't have to be a campsite) without having to drive a car as I drive every day at home.

Thanks for any suggestions. Things to do would be and added bonus!

What about a week in Greece, a nice hotel close to Athens - you can easily spend several days exploring just Athens, and then book tours that pick you up from the hotel for longer tours, to go see for example Delphi or temple of Poseidon. Plenty of history. Sorry no specific hotel recommendations.

Alicante, Malaga, Fuengirola, Tossa de Mar and likely other places have castles and are near Spanish cities so have good public transport. I think there's also one in Palma Mallorca. Will also have all manner of package holidays available.

But yes, definitely anywhere where you fly to a Spanish city on the Mediterranean coast is ideal. There's a train from Fuengirola to Malaga that goes through other resorts where you can see the old town of Benalmadena, ride the cable car up the mountain, visit Malaga city, go to the waterpark or Plaza Mayor outdoor mall. In fact, you don't actually need a package because there's loads of flights to Malaga from pretty much anywhere, easy public transport and just use booking.com for accommodation. Or a package might actually cost less.

There's also a tram that serves all the popular coastal towns along the Alicante coast so you can do similar there.

Lisbon? Either direct or stay in Cascais which is 1/2 hour train ride away.

If sun isn't mandatory, how about Munich? City trip with options to take a train to go on a day trip further away and there is plenty of shopping, history and museums.

It has a good public transport system, so you can take the S-Bahn and a bus to visit Dachau Concentration Camp for example.

what about a eurocamp near Lake Garda on the Verona side! https://www.eurocamp.co.uk/campsites/italy/lake-garda/camping-del-garda Perseira (sp) is 20 mins by train from Verona for a day out, to pools were nice, the ferry’s to other pretty historic towns leave from the stop a short walk away. History and round the pool in one.

I drive a car at home but driving a car on holiday is sometimes necessary!

Ideas - Bologna. Great history and train access to Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna and Parma. Great food and stunning places to visit. Further afield train journeys also available and check out Ferrari museum in Modena.

Milan has everything too. Again trains out to other towns and cities. Easy bus in from airport to city.

No idea about camping but Nice is great too. I think you need a car ideally but exploring by train along the coast is good and easy. You can easily get to Monaco.

Thanks all, that's me just home from my early start when I wrote the message and will now sit and read your suggestions / get Googling. Much appreciated.

I really do fancy a rest from driving / not keen on the extra expense of hiring a car if I don't have too, particularly when I'm on my own - I drive from early morning till around this time 5 days a week between work / chauffeuring the family.

Palma (Majorca) is a €20 taxi ride from the airport. It has an old town, an 800 year old cathedral, a royal palace, and a castle that has a real dungeon and great historical exhibits. It also has a beach on the front just down from the centre, and some really great beaches and seaside resorts (including the infamous Magaluf, even if you just want to gawp) about half an hour away by bus.

Thanks all. After a lot of Googling, I've booked to fly to Bratislava next week (a cheap flight and first night hotel booked so far within walking distance of airport). Eurocamp wasn't that helpful when I phoned re Italian sites and couldn't persuage the teenager to have a beach / chilled holiday. Having said that, I have a feeling several of the ideas could easily be bagged within a couple of years now the idea is in the youngesters heads.
