Is £1,700 for a week self catering a waste of money?

We are looking to go away in early July, before school hols, have found a cottage in the grounds of a bigger house to rent. 15 mins walk to a super beach. 5 mins to shop and restaurant. Swimming pool. It’s in a nice part of the South of France.

Flights are £150 each with luggage and the cottage is £1,400. It seems quite a lot of money for self catering seeing as you can get Spain package hols for similar or less.

That’s cheap as chips.

Gosh, where do you live?
Chips in area only cost £1.50 for a bag.
and salt and vinegar is FREE.

(Pickled eggs are a bit overpriced though, IMO.)

I think that seems quite cheap and good value. I don’t understand the hate for self catering? It gives you flexibility to eat in and eat out. And you get more of your own space.

I always do a nice hotel with breakfast only option so we can choose where different to explore and eat in every day.
You get all the good things about a hotel alongside the freedom to eat and go where you like without being restricted.

I wouldn’t pay that much for self catering and then pay on top to cook your own food op

You can go out and choose where to eat with self catering too? You aren’t forced to eat in the property 😆

MN is weird about Spain too, apparently thinking it's just a long line of Benidorm style AI hotels where all people do is lie by the pool and get pissed, stopping only to get up and fight over chips at the buffet.

Seems reasonable to me, holiday cottages in UK cost a fortune so assume south if France will also be pricey, the flights, are cheap.
It's hard to really judge without knowing more about the accommodation, size, location, how it's fitted out etc
But on the face of it it doesn't sound unreasonable, assume you've researched and it's comparable price to other similar self catering cottages in that area?
I like a cottage, you've got more space and facilities overall and you can cook or get a takeaway or you have freedom to explore and try new restaurants. Do have have DC?
A cottage is better accommodation for a family than a hotel room but you may have to work harder to keep them entertained.
And early July is still caught by school holiday premium prices although still probably cheaper than late July /early mid August.
If you don't have kids go in June or September
