How much medical insurance for USA?

I’m looking at travel insurance to the US to cover either £7.5 million or £10 million for medical treatment. Any ideas on whether £7.5 mil is enough? I’m aware of how expensive healthcare is over there.

I always just go for the maximum cover available. The price difference usually isn’t much and (god forbid) you were to ever need it you’d be glad you took the higher option, especially somewhere like the US.

Many thanks. There’s a difference of £200 between the two. It’s expensive due to having pre existing conditions—actually that’s a good reason to go with the higher level. (All conditions have been disclosed).

I don't know what your pre-existing conditions are, but as I understand it, even something as extreme as a heart transplant would cost £1.5 million in the US, not £7.5 million.

I would get more information before signing up.

That seems like a strange choice to be offered. How many procedures are there that would cost between £7.5 and £10 million, but not leave you ruined at £11 million?

I'd take the lower offer. Of course, it's easy to say "Always take the maximum, you never know, something bad might happen", but what if they offered you £20 million for another £300 premium, or £100 million for another £3,000? "Something bad might happen" still applies. (All online discussions about risk tend to be dominated by the most risk-averse; I wonder how some of the people on here ever manage to leave the house.)

My guess is that they have test-marketed this with panels and found that the extra £2.5 million for £200 is a sweet spot that gets them the most yield.
