Nicer accommodation vs more spending money

Looking at going away for 5 nights.

We can stay in a teeny tiny B&B room for £750 or we can rent an apartment for £1,100.

With the apartment we could cook in but with the B&B we couldn’t.

The apartment is nice and pretty spacious. The B&B room is literally a bed in the room and then communal areas

Do you want to cook in?
If you would prefer to eat out, I would book the cheaper room.
It doesn't really matter what a room looks like while you are asleep.

If holidaying well means cooking the local produce yourself, then book the dearer accommodation.

By communal areas do you mean a shared bathroom? If so that would be a no for me.

It also depends on the type of trip, for us city breaks are up and grab a quick bite then out so only using the room to sleep and wash really. More leisurely breaks I like to have space to sit, cook, read, enjoy buying food in local markets etc.

Depends if you’ll be out all day and on the cost of food at restaurants and if you’d rather eat in some nights.

If the B&B doesn’t have a private loo then I wouldn’t stay in it for love nor money. I’m currently away right now and had food poisoning. A toilet is a must.

Bjorkdidit · 05/05/2025 06:46

Is this somewhere where you'd want to sit outside? When we go away somewhere warm we prioritise outside space because that's where we are when we're not asleep or out and about.

Remember it's not just 'cooking' but drinks and snacks. We always want a fridge so we can keep the drinks that we have on the balcony or terrace cold. Also milk for morning tea and coffee.

But if its a holiday where you plan to be out and about a lot and prefer the money for restaurant meals and drinks/snacks while out, then B&B might work better as in effect you have £350 towards lunch, dinner and other food and drink while out and about.

Are these the only two options?

OddBoots · 05/05/2025 06:56

I would go for the apartment.

I wouldn't want to cook every meal but it gives the option of having breakfast in and making packed lunches if we wanted to save a bit of money.

More importantly to me though, it gives a place to be if one of us can't sleep and wanted to chill without waking the other.

Landlubber2019 · 05/05/2025 07:02

Definitely the apartment.....

Post covid we booked a holiday, hideously expensive and in the UK. But the accommodation was fantastic...... it definitely was one of my favourite holidays ....

Lurkingandlearning · 05/05/2025 07:49

The shared bathroom would put me off the B&B. Other than that I don’t mind having a very small room because when I’m on holiday I only use my room to sleep and shower. I definitely don’t want to cook. So I suppose having a larger room depends on how much time you will spend there

Decorhate · 05/05/2025 07:55

Are there definitely no other options? Seems like a very expensive place if a tiny room is £150 a night or an apartment is £220 a night. You'd normally get a very nice hotel at those price points.

FortyNineAndABit · 05/05/2025 07:58

You'll save a ton of money on food if you don't have to eat out three times a day.

Bjorkdidit · 05/05/2025 08:11

They won't be eating out three times a day, it's a B&B. So depending on how they like to eat, they could have a big, late breakfast before they go out for the day and then one meal out, whether it's dinner or a late lunch.

Then if they're hungry at other times of day, this could be covered by an ice cream, coffee and cake, nuts with drinks etc, so only actually paying for one full meal out per day which, unless it's an expensive area, or they like fine dining, multiple courses, lots of wine etc, which will probably be amply covered by the £350 difference in the cost of the accommodation, assuming there's 2 of them.

But it also depends on where they are. Relaxing holiday where they want to chill, the apartment, assuming it has some outside space, or is comfortable inside, if they're not going somewhere warm. But if they're going to be out and about doing sports or seeing the sights, then the B&B might suit better.

Not a shared bathroom, no
