Please give me your recommendations for 1 year old and 4 year old, we have a car so happy to travel and explore.

The only 2 I know are Carvoeiro and Alvor. The first small, with plenty of rock pools, but other coves nearby; the latter, wider with a couple of different areas to explore.
you need to be aware of the waves though, they can be wild.

Breeezy · 04/05/2025 21:41

Are they quite easy to access? I know some have lots of steps down…

Praia da Rocha was fab for kids but sorry I can't remember if there was steps down to it.

EggyBreads · 04/05/2025 22:11

Alvor is great for kids, massive sandy beach with a board walk all the way along. So hardly any steps

Breeezy · 04/05/2025 22:21

Thank you!!

Yes, agree Alvor is easy access; I was there last year with friends. It was a beautiful expanse of beach
We were In Carvoeiro years ago when my DC were small, and it was lovely, very easy, and straight off the main town.

Costacoffeeplease · 04/05/2025 22:59

I live in carvoeiro, there are no steps to the town beach as it is at the same level as the centre of the village. It’s also very sandy.

Breeezy · 04/05/2025 23:04

Thank you all so much
@Costacoffeeplease if you have any Carvoiero restaurant recommendations do let me know!!

Praia do Barril if you go east, cute little train to the beach and glorious sandy miles when you get there.

No problem. What type of restaurant are you looking for?

Breeezy · 05/05/2025 11:52

@Costacoffeeplease we eat anything to be honest!

Ok, I’d recommend
O Cantinho,
Casa Algarvia,
Jota Lita and A Galé are popular but a bit too much of a squash for me, the tables are very close together
Vimar - best to get a table at the front
Etxea for a more upmarket experience
Pistache or Mirage for pizza
Earth cafe for breakfast/brunch/lunch
Vila Nova on the Vila Nova development just outside the centre of the village
Chicken piri piri take away Galo d’Ouro at the beginning of the ‘in’ road
Jomar cafe/bar which is open all day from breakfast until late
Cheers bar for cocktails and rosti, but you need to book in advance if you want the rosti
Chefs Kitchen has just re opened after a refit so we haven’t been to the new version yet but has always been good
O Indiano and Ghurka Kitchen get good reviews for Indian food

I would avoid the places in the square as you pay a premium for the location and I don’t think any of them are worth it

Best ice cream Gelados e Companhia, just off the square

Hope this helps!

Have a good time 😄

Costacoffeeplease · 05/05/2025 12:15

Oh and some places don’t take cards so it’s worth checking in advance. There are lots of ATMs but they can empty quickly at busy times

minipie · 05/05/2025 16:26

My goodness Costacoffee what great information!

I’ve been looking at that area for August, it looks beautiful but have never been to Portugal before. What sort of temperatures do you get in August, and is there a breeze? Are beaches totally packed out if you get there at say 10am? (Not just Carvoeira beach but others locally). Thank you so much!

Costacoffeeplease · 05/05/2025 18:18

August will be hot, not ridiculously hot as we do get a sea breeze most of the time, but prob averages mid 30s so you will need aircon in your accommodation.

It does get busy and parking can be a problem but there are larger beaches either side of Carvoeiro - Praia Grande in Ferragudo and Praia do Centeanes about ten minutes drive from the village beach I’m sure both of them would be fine at 10am.

Taxis and Ubers are plentiful and cheap too

minipie · 05/05/2025 19:02

Thank you! Yes we would definitely get aircon and rent a car to explore different beaches and towns. Just wanted to check if it’s like Italian beaches where it’s shoulder to shoulder in August and not a spare inch, sounds like it’s better at
least at the beaches outside of town.

Mid 30s with a breeze is do able (my kids are older) very different from mid 30s with not breeze which we would struggle with

Thanks for the info

SantasLargerHelper · 06/05/2025 07:17

The Algarve is so much better than the med in August imo. You can sleep at night because of the fresh Atlantic breeze. And the beaches are so big, you can always get a spot.

justasking111 · 06/05/2025 07:30

Praia de Luz great easy access beach. Sagres is cooler than further east.

Breeezy · 07/05/2025 12:04

Thanks all.
