Has anyone been for a hiking holiday in the Domomites are able to offer suggestions of good places to stay?
Partner and I have a rare 4/5 days in July when the kids are with their dad and we're wondering if this would be enough time to visit? We love outdoors, hiking type hols. Have done Wales a few times, wanted to do Scotland but apparently midges would be a nightmare so thought dolomites maybe? Any advice or other suggestions? Thank you

We love hiking in the dolomites. I would recommend staying in the Alta Badia region. Depends how remote you want to be and what kind of holiday. Santa Christina is a nice town with restaurants and a few shops etc. somewhere like Cortina or Corvara are set up well as they're ski towns.

If you want to go more remote and stay up high then stay in one of the rifugios.

Most ski resorts in the Alps whether in Italy, France or Austria now have excellent summer programmes, so perhaps look at where you can most easily get to (e.g. Lyon, Geneva, Salzburg etc.) and then look at the most accessible resorts.

We stayed in Ortisei. It's a very attractive town on the edge of a very beautiful part of the Dolomites. There are several cable cars/funicular up to good walking areas (Alpe di Siusi, Resciesa, Seceda) and a fun indoor/outdoor public pool complex.
We drove to Cinque Torre one day and it took a while but was worth it. I'd be interested in staying in or near Cortina next time as it's nearer Cinque Torre and the really big mountains, but I'm not sure it'd be as charming a town as Ortisei.

The Pyrenees are lovely in summer too.

Have a look at San Candido, lots of pretty accommodation and a great little town with good transport links.
