Hi all!

We have booked to go to Portpatrick this summer with our 4 year old. Does anyone have any recommendations of things to do close by (up to an hour ish away) that would keep him amused?

We've just been to Whitby and obviously there's loads to do over in that area!

Portpatrick Beach is good for rockpooling and the harbour is good for crabbing.
There’s a maze at Dunskey Gardens
Ryan Centre Swimming Pool has slides and a soft play area.
Drumawhey Junction Railway has train rides.

Portpatrick is gorgeous. A bit over an hour away, but we regularly go to Kirkcudbright. Every Thursday (I think) throughout the summer they hold Scottish night in the square, it's free, there's a band and local Scottish dancers - kids love it. https://www.kirkcudbright.town/kirkcudbright-summer-festivities/scottish-nights/
Kirkcudbright is lovely, for young kids there's a really good planetarium opened up which kept mine amused: https://www.darkspaceplanetarium.org/
There's a cool reconstruction of an Iron age roundhouse in Whithorn that my kids also enjoyed: https://www.whithorn.com/

Haven't been there for years but when I was younger Portpatrick had a putting green and an arcade/ice cream shop which was always a good day out 😊 Second the Ryan Centre for soft play/swimming or indoor sports if your DS enjoys that sort of thing. Again, not been in a while but Agnew Park in Stranraer (short drive away) used to have a miniature train and little pedal boats. There's also Stranraer Museum that I enjoyed as a kid!

Lots to do near Kirkcudbright, with Scottish nights, planetarium and nearby Cocoabean (chocolate workshops, soft play and outdoor slides). Logan Botanical Garden is lovely and I enjoy the old world charm of the Logan Fish Pond. Mull of Galloway is a great spot on a clear day. You can climb up the lighthouse there and are awarded a little certificate for your effort!
