We’re travelling to Thailand with a 20 month old, he’s normal height and weight for his age. Does anyone know if he will fit in the bassinet or likely to be too big and also what food do they offer for them. He’s too old for Ella’s kitchen (read that online)

Those are for babies not almost 2 year olds.

Sheldon4k · 28/04/2025 14:03

I doubt it. My daughter was 4 months and we had one, 14 months and we didnt get offered but even if we had she wouldn't have fit in and I would say she has always been slightly on the smaller side of normal.

Food... I can only ever remember her having milk (4month) and then a kids meal (so possibly a kids meal at that age).

Emirates customer service (believe they do an online chat) were always really helpful. Maybe try asking them on there for reassurance before you travel and so you know if you need to take anything with you.

They have the weight and height restrictions here, but you’re probably better off with him in a seat, the Ella’s stuff is just the baby menu, they have normal kids meals for the 2-12 range

Most likely too big and also too old. If it’s a busy flight the bassinets will go to the youngest babies first. That was our experience a few years ago.

Energe · 28/04/2025 20:29

He’s too old and too big

Judiezones · 28/04/2025 20:34

We sat next to a couple with a 6 month old baby boy and he only just fit in it. They ended up using it to keep all his paraphernalia in and took it in turns to hold him. I have to say he was the most delightful and well-behaved passenger I have ever sat next to!

CountryQueen · 28/04/2025 20:41

An almost 2 year old is not going in a bassinet. Surely he’d just climb out?!

Overthebow · 28/04/2025 20:44

No he’ll be too big and surely would climb out of it! At 20 months we bought our dd her own seat and she sat fine in it fine, it would be hard to have a child of that age on your lap the whole time and a seat gives them space to sleep too.

Overthebow · 28/04/2025 20:45

For food you could book him a standard kids meal.

WonderingWanda · 28/04/2025 20:49

I think for that distance you'd really be better off buying him a seat and then he would get a kids meal. He is going to be a massive fidget and pretty heavy on your lap for 10 hrs. Why don't you have a practice run at home try sitting on a dining chair at the table with him on your lap and see if you can entertain him, hold him when asleep for 6 hrs etc.

PurBal · 28/04/2025 20:50

I’d book a seat for him tbh.

Temporaryname158 · 28/04/2025 20:50

He isn’t a baby. He’s not going to go in a babies bassinet.

food will be the standard child’s menu

Jazzythegingerninja · 28/04/2025 20:53

I took a 15 month old on Emirates with a bassinet. She stood up in it and waved to everyone for 4 of the 6 hours! He may just squeeze in if you're lucky.

pinkfloralcurtains · 28/04/2025 21:00

If he’s travelling on your lap then he won’t receive a child’s meal, partly because there’s nowhere to put it (you need a tray). They have Ella’s pouches on board for lap infants.

I’m afraid he’ll also be far too big for the bassinet. Most babies are by about 9 months.

sugarandplum · 28/04/2025 21:04

I flew with our 18 month old to Dubai, so 7.5 hours but we booked a seat. That was tricky enough. Honestly, I really would book him a seat. It’s such a long way and won’t be comfortable for either of you.

we flew with emirates recently, I can’t remember exactly what the kids meals were but there were definitely ok! My 6 year old finished the lot whilst my fussy 4 year old barely touched it - nothing to do with the dinner though! It definitely had bread, an approx yogurt/ custard, raisins, possibly some kind of cheese I think and the meal. It may have had another couple of items but I’m afraid I can’t remember.

i pack a bento packed lunch with lots of picky items

good luck!

Longhotsummers · 28/04/2025 21:23

Definitely book a seat. My DS was too
big at 9 months old to fit. I took his car seat and he slept in that.

Radiatorvalves · 28/04/2025 21:29

Mine only just fitted in at 7 months!

pleasepleasepleasedontmakemedothefolding · 28/04/2025 21:36

At 7 months (very small baby) they said that if he could sit up by himself he wasn't allowed to use the bassinet. Fortunately wasn't the case for us, but at that age/size i'd be shocked if they let you.

Sheldon4k · 28/04/2025 22:00

On the get a seat issue, we were possibly very lucky but on our flights with 14 month old we were actually given a spare seat (they did tell us at check in they try and allocate spare seats to those with lap toddlers).
Obviously only works in your favour if the flight isnt full though.
