Loved the myrdal to flam train journey and bergen.

Bring lots of money. And thin thermals and waterproofs that you can pack (it poured with rain last august) as it's so expensive to buy them there. It was also cold so we needed jumpers.

We did a mix of airbnbs and hotels so that we could have access to a washing machine and fridge. We also took with us snacks.
Oh and bring your own paracetamol, ibuprofen. Basically, bring as much as possible!!! Amazing country, so gorgeous.

We took the Hurtigrunen ferry from Bergen to Alesund. Loved it. Great little museum in Alesund for kids.

Norway's wonderful. Hurtigruten ferry up and down the coast recommended. We did the Flåm Railway and loved that too. Don't forget pharma stuff - I forgot my lactase tablets and replacing them was expensive. (But the Norwegian ones were great.)

Things we loved in Oslo - the Munch museum and national gallery/museum. Walking on the opera house roof (we also went to an opera and it was fab). Smalhans restaurant for lunch set menu. Really all the art galleries tbh. The ancient viking helmet in the history museum.

Bergen and Oslo are both really nice to walk around. I have heard Christiansand is lovely.

The scenery is stunning everywhere to be honest!

We went to the Bryksdal glacier and on the troll cars which was good fun. There is a really beautiful fjord with turquoise water just before it.

Bear in mind you could have some highly changeable weather.

It might not matter so much by September but a lot of hotels in Norway don't have aircon. I found the beds in Norwegian hotels incredibly comfortable (I keep researching what mattresses and toppers they use!) but, surprisingly given their average height) double beds were quite small . We went for twins.

I wouldn't bother going as far as Tromso or the Atlantic Road which was nothing special after seeing the fjords.

Edited

Oh my God, yes! I got a dose of Covid when I was there and popped into a pharmacy in Lillehammer to get paracetamol. I nearly fainted at the price!

Tromso and Svalbard

Piggywaspushed · 27/04/2025 08:19

Can't edit my post but I meant Molde , not Tromso,

Martin Compston did one of those road trip programmes about Norway which is worth watching and should be on IPlayer still.

Have you thought about flying into Copenhagen and then getting the ferry up to Oslo - it's amazing scenery on your way in and easy to get from the airport to the ferry terminal :)

FanSpamTastic · 27/04/2025 10:59

We flew into Oslo then took the train up towards Flam. We stayed in Voss. Took the train back to Myrdal and then did the zip line/bike down to Flam - great fun! Then got a bus back to Voss. In Voss went walking in the mountains. Then carried on for last few days in Bergen and flew home from there. That was enough for a week.

FishfingerFlinger · 28/04/2025 23:59

We did a week Oslo to Bergen and back by train/bus/boat, via Myrdal/Flam/Voss. We were there at Easter and got a few days skiing in Voss at the end of the season. We then got the sleeper train back to Oslo. I fell in love with Bergen.

i haven’t done it myself but gutted I didn’t know at the time about the overnight ferry from Copenhagen to Oslo - absolutely would have done this if I had known about it, it’s very reasonably priced.

Random recommendation but we spent several hours in Oslo central library, it’s amazing.

I recommend the Scandic hotel chain - it’s not too pricey and their buffet breakfasts are amazing - we are like kings every morning to keep our food budget reasonable.

Oslo is amazing. I didn’t, but you might want to consider taking your swimming things for a swim and sauna in the fjords. I loved the resistance museum there, plus the opera house and sculpture park.

When we went we flew into Stockholm and back from Oslo with car hire in-between, can be worth looking at different start and end locations. Between Bergen and Alesund was especially spectacular though so were the prices. Weather can be very variable as well similar to north of UK. We went in 2019 and remember passing a supermarket with a takeaway noodle store outside and I said to DH to get me some thinking well that will at least be one cheap meal and that was £15 in middle of nowhere. A meal by the fjords in a very average cafe started at £30 for a main course for what looked like from pictures heated up frozen burger and chips. Flam railway was good if very touristy.

FishfingerFlinger · 29/04/2025 21:10

Eating out really is expensive. We brought packet noodles and canned hot dogs from the UK and ate them in the hotel room for a couple of meals!

Tromsø- my home town!
If you have time my suggestion would be a couple of days on the lofoten islands with car hire. Perhaps the Viking museum on Gravdal - Lofotr.
