Paying for seats on flights

We are flying to America in October and I assumed as a family of 6 would be seated together. Looking on their extras it says you can pay to reserve seats, does that mean even if we checked in together we wouldn’t be seated together?
Should I pay the extra to ensure we are together?

I don’t consider myself a whinger. As posted upthread Dh and I are flying business class next year and BA want to charge me another £400 to choose seats. I think it’s taking the piss.

Then use another airline….

would if I could. My preferred choice is Cathay, but doesn’t work for this trip. But BA will not be getting any more money from me for seat selection.

That’s the beauty of a la carte pricing. We all can choose what is important to us without paying for things we deem not worth it.

Not a wind up, I just wanted to make sure.
we haven’t flown at all as adults, my husband not at all.
all children are over the age of 12 so I just wanted to be certain it’s worth paying.
We are flying with Virgin for anyone who asked.

You don’t need to pay for seats but if you don’t, you have to accept you may all be sat separately. If this doesn’t bother your family, you could save the money. However if other people have paid to book specific seats, they are unlikely to move to accommodate your family wanting to then sit together.

True. But I think seat choice should be included in a business class ticket as part of the a la carte pricing. I don’t think this is unreasonable given the cost of a business class ticket.

Maybe worth remembering where the option of their routes suit those travelling Business Class? Neither Singapore Airlines or Qantas charge for seat selection in Business Class.

Honestly, that’s a risk you’ve taken and gotten away with so far. My daughter has just had an awful experience doing the same thing…flying with a 6 year old and a 3 year old on her own, all three seats she was allocated at check in were separate!! She literally had to beg and plead with other people to be given just 2 seats together…her 6 year old was seated 3 rows in front! As soon as seat belt off signs were lit, she sat the 3 year old on her lap and sat my granddaughter next to her.

That’s not great for her, the children or the person who had a random 6 year old next to them on departure & arrival. Will she now be booking seats for future flights?

proceed with caution, l was once stuck next to a woman who really smelled!

But even if you pay and choose your seats, unless you've got the whole row you could still end up next to a smelly person.

Absolutely 💯 definitely a lesson learnt!
