Suggestions for North Norfolk

shropshirelass51 · 21/04/2025 21:01

Having had some great suggestions about going car free in Norfolk ( couple in early 60's) we have decided to stay in North Norfolk and want to firm up arrangements.
We hope to stay in Norwich for a couple of nights and then somewhere further North for 6/7 nights. Where would be the best place to stay, Cromer, Sherrington or elsewhere and any suggestions as to places we should definitely go to? We know we can only fit in limited trips especially without a car. We generally enjoy public transport and feel it can be part of the experience.
Thanks for any help

There's a Coastliner bus so pick somewhere along that route? You could look at Hunstanton perhaps. There are two lovely, quite different beaches, some good cafes, Sealife, Wash Monster (boat trip to see the seals), Norfolk Lavender, etc. Plus a bunch of tacky but fun seaside stuff like pirate crazy golf! Depends what you like really. We like visiting National Trust houses and castles and a car makes that easier.

If you stay at Heacham Manor you can use the pools and restaurants at Searles next door.

As PP said, it depends on what you like to do. Cromer is lovely, a traditional seaside town with a sandy beach and the end of the pier show! There is a train station which is close to the town centre, you can take the train to sheringham and bus back.

And to add, I think there are direct trains from Norwich to cromer so easy to get there.

If you’re anywhere near Holt you can get the steam train to Sheringham.

Wells next to the sea
lovely large village, various restaurants, beach there, inland walks, walk to Holkham hall along coast

personally I would struggle in NN without a car

What do you enjoy doing?
Some ideas (other than beaches)
Norwich -
Castle.
Cathedral (has a Paddington Bear on a bench)
Riverside walk to see Cow Tower and Pulls Ferry
Adam and Eve pub (oldest in Norwich)
Arboretum - fab very unusual bar/cocktails - if the light is on outside then it's open.
Lunch at Cafe 33 in Chapelfield Gardens
The Lanes - lots of independent shops, cafes, junk shops etc

Norfolk Broads boat trip from Wroxham.

Blickling Hall, not sure re public transport though.

Blakeney for seals boat trip

Chips (Mary Janes) on the pier in Cromer.

Sheringham and Wells are both nice small seaside towns. Coastal path walk from Sheringham to Weybourne, lunch at The Ship.

Fossil hunting is good at West Runton.

Let me know if you want any more info.

North norfolk can be a bit of a nightmare without a car though saying that Sheringham & Cromer both have train stations & at least hourly busses to Norwich there is also a coastline bus. Both run by sanders coaches. Both are lovely little seaside towns both have museums, arcades, lovely walks. Cromer also has the pier and a zoo. if you stay in one take the train to the other for a day trip.

Train runs from Norwich to Cromer and then Sheringham (stop for lunch at the Suffield Arms opposite the tiny Gunton Station).

Poppyline to Holt (Byfords and lots of independent shops)

coasthopper runs between Cromer and wells hourly and you can stop off at morston (morston hall for afternoon tea) and Cley Vistor centre (amazing cafe with great views) and west runton (fossil hunting and cafe)

BangersAndGnash · 21/04/2025 23:23

Get the train from Norwich to Sheringham and then find somewhere to stay along the Coast Rd served by the Coasthopper service run by Sanders. Sheringham, Blakeney or Wells would all be good places to stay.

Plenty to see and plenty of lovely walks connected to that route.

Seal trips from Morston Quay (not Blakeney).

What sort of things do you enjoy?

Notoironing · 21/04/2025 23:37

Weybourne
there is a holiday park with its own steam train stop or in the village there is also the bus.

HeddaGarbled · 21/04/2025 23:45

Just a heads-up: the Poppyline (heritage steam railway) station at Holt is a mile and a half from the town centre, whereas the bus from Sheringham will take you right into the town centre.
