City Break May

Any ideas for a city break with tweens and a 7 year old? We've already been to Barcelona, Portugal and Paris. Thinking of May half term, something that isn't too expensive is a bonus.

Going to disagree. I don’t think Krakow is ideal for younger kids tbh. Yes there’s Energylandia but most of the museums we went to were quite traditional. There’s the underground rynek which is a bit more interactive but not much that will interest a 7 year old. Loads of basement bars, nice churches to visit and architecture to admire, guided walks, etc but I’m not sure my 7 year old would have been that impressed, my 15/16 year old definitely! Auschwitz isn’t for under 14s and Zakopane is a long long day. Salt mines maybe but quite strenuous for little legs with all the steps.

I guess it depends what you do with the kids when you are there, and what your children like to do. There are quite a few attractions that my kids would have loved when they were younger (all adults now). House of Attractions, theme park, thermal water park, Bricks and Figs (lego displays), zoo, museum of illusions, golf buggy tours, the castle. They'd have loved the food - especially the street food. Personally I think there's a great mix of things to appeal to both adults and children.

I agree that Auschwitz is probably not for the 7 year old (depends very much on the child though, we saw quite a few young children there when we visited). The salt mines might be ok, again depending on the child - mine would all have been fine with the steps at that age.

Even a 7 year old will be doing some history. So possibly a holiday linking in with the Romans or Vikings? Mine both enjoyed art and impressionist art. Both had looked at Van Gogh paintings at school before y3 and had made “sunflowers”. We never went to theme parks. The best cities don’t require this type of visit if you only have a few days there.

We went to Amsterdam with a then 11 year old last year and he loved it, we went to the Johan Cruyff arena (footy stadium) a canal boat ride which was amazing, This is Holland museum (which ends with great 5D ride), Zaanse Schans to see the windmills, we ate Frites and Strooop waffles, went to the Tony's Chocolonely shop and just wandered around the streets it was brilliant.

Nuremburg. Great castle with a tower to climb, Toy Museum, Train Museum, plus if you have longer you can get a train out to one of the Romantische Straße villages like Rothenburg ob der Tauber, which was the inspiration for the Disney European style village settings.

We're just back from Genoa in Italy. Lovely, city, not too touristy. Also great train links to other places - we did a day trip to Pisa. Food was sensibly priced and great. It was much cheaper than other cities we've been to.

Places I’ve enjoyed
Porto (cheap transfer from the airport on the metro, very walkable city)
Seville (amazing food, beautiful place)
Valencia (can also get the bus to the beach which may appeal to the dc)
Malaga (beautiful city with added bonus that it’s also by the seaside)
Munich (has a fabulous huge park which is a nice break from the city)
Lisbon/Sintra
Budapest
Rome
Venice
