French alps- summer holidays!

DC aged 3,5,7.

DS (5) gets irritable and tired in the sun. Tried an all inclusive last year and felt as though we binged for the sake of the food being there, didn’t really like the “canteen” style of dining. Also felt slightly glued to the hotel.

Did euro camp the year before which was great although no air con was tough (Vendee region) and I did feel as though I cooked and tidied up the chalet all week. Kids were however much younger so I suspect that didn’t help.

The kids loved skiing this year and I felt that the mountain air, lots of activities etc was better- but my DD (7) will still want a pool / slides etc. She will happily stay in the pool all day.

Turkey etc going to be far too hot. I thought perhaps somewhere in the alps could be good? Does anyone have any recommendations? I’m a bit stuck!

We had a couple of summers in the morzine / les gets area and it was fabulous. It does get very hot there but so much to do and stunningly beautiful

We have done Les Gets the last 3 winters with the kids and it’s amazing! Make sure you do the big toboggan ride through the mountain it’s gorgeous and so much fun for all ages. Id happily go back for summer hols but given we’ve been so much I feel we should have a bit of a change of scenery!

Look at Lake Annecy too - you could do a few days there and a few days in the mountains.

LoudSnoringDog · 12/04/2025 08:14

Montriond is lovely and as already pointed out- Annecy is a good shout too. The French alps in the summer are great but I really recommend the Austrian alps if you fancy something different. Lots to do around the zell am see / Kaprun region

Have a look at Landal Vierwaldstättersee. It’s in the Swiss alps and has loads of activities onsite including waterslides, bowling, go karts etc… There are several restaurants if you don’t fancy cooking.

"The Alps" are more than just France. Mountain holidays in Austria or Italy are also great, with plenty of fresh air and activities, and most places have an outdoor pool or even a lake for swimming.

For example - Zell am See or Saalbach-Hinterglemm in Austria. Both have loads of summer activities (hiking, treasure trails, climbing parks, mountain-top playgrounds etc) and both offer a summer card that gives free use of the cable cars, pools, public transport and many other attractions.

Morzine has a large public pool with a slide, included in the Multipass (you pay €3 pp per day for this and it covers loads - pool, ski lifts to go up the mountain, minigolf, trampolines etc). Loads of other stuff to do around - goat village, walks, bike rides, lake for swimming or kayak/SUP, tennis etc etc. Easy to go to Les Gets for Wibit and toboggan, or Avoriaz which has an indoor water park for any rainy days.

If you want more slides you probably need to pick one of the Eurocamps with slides, I think there are a couple in the Alps. There aren’t the really big hotels with lots of slides in the Alps as far as I’ve seen. Self catering apt or a half board small hotel is more usual. There are a few catered chalets if that appeals eg Simply Morzine.

Look at places like the black forest in Germany. You could stay on a eurocamp style place and get all the facilities like play areas and water slides. My children loved this type of holiday.

We're going to Les Get in the summer but aren't staying in a place that you can get the multipass for €3 unfortunately. We're trying to figure out the cheapest way to buy it. Is it the sort of thing you would used every day? Thank you!!

minipie · 16/04/2025 21:41

Jebber I think we probably used the multipass about half the days in some way (pool or mini golf or ski lift). I wouldn’t have paid the non discounted price for it though

OP, just re reading the ages of your kids - I would look at Kinderhotels in the Austrian Alps
