Ideas for a holiday to include Legoland Windsor

Hello,

Looking for suggestions, please!

We have promised the DC a trip to Legoland this summer. As we are in Scotland it's a bit of trek, so we want to rent a cottage somewhere close by and turn it into a week's family holiday. Can anyone suggest a nice town/village or general area to base ourselves within a reasonable distance for a day trip to Legoland? Probably within 90 mins drive to make it feasible.

And for anyone who's been to Legoland, is one day enough?

Thanks. X

Merlin Pass currently has a sale so worth looking at the figures to take advantage of the off-peak dates. You could do London Eye and Sealife (train into Waterloo) and Chessington. Chessington is actually great for little kids as it has the animals and several small rides. Maybe Warwick Castle on the way down or up.

You could consider being down the M3 and also visiting Paulton's Park near Southampton (which in my view is more suitable for your age group anyway.)

But if not, the Windsor itself. Go on a boat trip down the Thames, see the changing of the guard in Windsor.

Oh yes, definitely Bekonscot as pp said.

It is a bit further out but a very lovely place to visit on one of your days is the Cotswold wildlife park. It is probably about 90 minutes from Windsor but a great day out and good value too,

We had a lovely Easter week staying in Old Windsor when dd was little. We went to the Castle, plus the Long Walk and the farm shop. Did a boat trip on the river, and had a wander round Eton. Went in to London for a day to the Science Museum, and another day at RHS Wisley. There was a great farm park - Odds Farm? with animals and playgrounds etc. Hampton Court I think also on the same trip. There were some nice pubs and restaurants for food and a great chinese takeaway in the village.

We were planning Legoland Windsor (from Northern Ireland) but ended up going to Legoland Germany- flying and hiring a car, which we probably would have done for Windsor anyway. We flew to Memmingen and stayed in a Eurocamp. The Legoland hotel was cheaper on Germany than England but not worth it £££ for a family of 5. My friend was in Windsor at the same time as us and the two parks seem basically the same.
Just an idea!

I agree with staying in Windsor, we stayed for 3 nights and did 2 full days at Legoland. We went the first week of July and it wasn’t too busy although there were a lot of school trips. We then headed to London for a few nights and then finished off in Lichfield and flew home to Scotland from East Midlands.

Def go to https://www.oddsfarm.co.uk/ and https://www.bekonscot.co.uk/

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/oxfordshire-buckinghamshire-berkshire/cliveden - Cliveden is also very near by and is stunning https://boatingatcliveden.co.uk/

Windsor great park is lovely as is the Royal Walk.

Black Park with its big lake is stunning and you can hire bicyles there. It is next door to Pinewood Studios and many famous films have been shot there.

Burnham Beeches is also lovely https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g1491773-d6540472-Reviews-Burnham_Beeches-Farnham_Common_Buckinghamshire_England.html

Henley and Marlow are also pretty. There are places in stunning villages where you can swim / paddle in the Thames as there are little flat beaches. You can also walk between the villages along the Thames path.

These are all within a few miles of Windsor

Frensham pond is about 40mins from central Windsor - is a large lake with a white sandy beach which is perfect for little ones https://www.theamblingpath.co.uk/the-walks/frenshamgreatpond

@Bamboopole Windsor is absolutely fine. Why anyone would go into Surrey or Hampshire is beyond me! You would spend too long in the car. You can have a look around the castle as well. There’s also the Thames villages and they are lovely. Marlow is lovely and not far away.

When we took DDs many years ago, DD aged 3 wasn’t big enough for lots of rides!

Bamboopole · 08/04/2025 23:26

Thanks, everyone, for such helpful responses. I've been looking at the map and realise I know some of these places from visiting family in Wokingham many moons ago. I'd forgotten all about that model village - the kids will love it!!

Please don’t even think about the Cotswold Wildlife park! It’s miles - I think some people don’t know where Windsor is! It’s quicker to get to Whipsnade Zoo if you are desperate for a zoo. Odds Farm is certainly ok too. For a short stay, you have enough at Windsor or nearby and, personally, 2 days at Legoland is too much. London for a day on the train is a better idea if you want to go further.

LadyGAgain · 09/04/2025 00:29

a few mentions of the new forest which is a stones throw from Paultons park and peppa pig world. Which is A MILLION times better than Lego land which is tired and not very good quite frankly!

tellmesomethingtrue · 09/04/2025 01:03

It will definitely be busy. They always pack way too many people in so queues are awful. We’d done only 2 rides by midday and we had got there at rope drop. I will take my kids out of school for a day next time, or take them to Denmark instead.

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 09/04/2025 08:16

I would probably look to book a deal with Lego land and do two days in the park and stay nearby or in the actual hotel if budget allows over night. We did this when the dds were 5 and 8 and they loved it. Dd2 actually cried on the way home as she wanted to live there.

as your littlest is only 3 I probably wouldn’t bother heading into London. If you’re not used to London then taking a tot sounds stressful.

id probably then go and stay in the Poole area for the rest of the time. Lovely beaches at studland and boat trips to brownsea island. Close enough to the new forest and paultons park for peppa pig world, for the youngest, if you like. Tower park if you get some dodgy weather. You could also probably get to marwell zoo easily enough from there.
