NYC and Niagara

Hi there, dd1 (23) and I are taking a trip to NYC, Hudson and Niagara at end July/ beginning August. We are staying with family in Hudson for 4 days, 3 nights in Niagara and 3 nights in NYC. I've done this trip quite a few times and dd1 twice but as a little girl. It's an important trip for many reasons. I'll be spending my birthday in NYC. We'll probs do a couple of the usual tourist things: Empire State, Staten Island Ferry, Maid of the Mist. Also the High Line, Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park and the Guggenheim. The met is closed over August, sadly.

So, looking for a couple of more unusual/ less touristy ideas in NYC and Niagara plus recommendations for eating that aren't too expensive. Also, any recommendations for supermarkets? I remember there weren't many oddly, last time we were in NYC and the food shops there were massively overpriced. It's the first time I've been to NYC with both myself and dd1 as grownups so interested in nightlife too (where I won't be an embarrassment to her!). Not casinos. More roof top bars. Not too expensive though unless it's worth it for one cocktail, for example.

Booked hotel in Niagara but also open to recommendations for reasonably priced hotels in NYC. Thanks so much.

Not sure what to suggest for your birthday, depends on what you like to do.

A couple of thoughts: What Met will be closed in August? If you're talking about the Metropolitan Museum of Art, it will definitely not be closed in August.

For supermarkets, what neighbourhood will you be staying in?

For hotels, I've heard good things about Pod 51.

Brilliant suggestions, thanks. Exactly what I'm after. Met opera, I meant.

I would have loved to have done bagel making on my birthday @Forgottenmyphone ! But it's only Friday and Sunday sadly.

If you can get out to Niagara-on-the-lake it’s beautiful there, well worth a walk round. Three days in Niagara is a lot though, unless you like bars, amusements and casinos. I’d do a day less and an extra day in New York if it were me.

I have to agree about Niagara it’s like Blackpool but by a waterfall, three days seems a very long time to spend there.

We ate up the Skylon tower at Niagara and the food was surprisingly decent compared to the plethora of fast food and buffet restaurants. You also get to enjoy the view during your meal.

I would stay on the Canadian side and only go for 2 days. The US side is pretty awful and I say that as someone who used to live there.

Ah yes, actually I was reading it as OP is staying on the Canadian side then travelling through to the US. If she’s staying only in the US then there’s pretty much nothing to do in Niagara apart from the boat trip.
