Santorini, Paros and Naxos in August

I’ve finally booked flights to Santorini mid August (I know, I know). Travelling with DH and 2 DC (11,14). We are using it as a stop over for an easy ferry trip to Paros and Naxos. We have 10 days. How should we split our time and where should we stay?

We want to see a sunset in Santorini but get there too late on the day we fly in. Should we do 2 nights at the start of our journey there in Santorini then 4 nights in each of the other places? We don’t fly out of Santorini until the evening of our final day.

Any recommendations for where to stay on the 3 islands bearing in mind DC and their ages?

We like exploring villages, beaches, great food, swimming. Not into adventure sports. Will do sailing day trips.

Problems with ferries are not frequent but can happen. I’ve been marooned in Greece before. There is the occasional strike, plus August can have some windy days. The Greeks call this wind the Meltelmi. If the coastguard bans all sailings because of the weather, ferries by law cannot sail. Plus schedule changes are not unheard of.

l repeat though, this does not happen frequently, but l would always recommend getting back to an “airport island” a few days before and staying over on your arrival day in case of outbound flight delays and potential to miss boats.

Have a lovely time. x

Yes I broke my own rule to "never book a flight and a ferry on the same day" and paid the price as we missed our ferry by about ten minutes. Thank you Easyjet 😠. Fortunately it was from Rafina so quite a pleasant place to have lunch and the next one was only two hours later. Wouldn't risk it for the Naxos/Paros routes though.

Also the ferries were all cancelled on one day for wind but fortunately we weren't travelling ourselves that day.

We actually rearranged our plans to stay one night in Santorini at each end due to be being forewarned by posters on here - thank you!

As promised here is the Santorini place. It was incredible. We got it for a good price too. Loads of Americans stayed clear this year due to the seismic activity in February. The website actually doesn’t do it justice:

How was the weather in August OP?

August was surprisingly absolutely OK. That part of Greece gets a lot of wind in August so there was always a nice breeze. Actually Santorini was hot in the middle of the day but then I wouldn’t recommend lingering long there anyway. I found it rather charmless - apart from the views from our lovely hotel. If you don’t like wild waves, hire a car on Naxos so you can go round to the quieter side of the island where wind surfers do not dominate.
