3 days in Lisbon

What are the must-sees? We’re arriving mid morning and staying 3 nights, flight home is mid afternoon.

Any suggestions for a rough itinerary? I’ve heard Sitges is worth a visit, think it’s a train ride away?

Sitges? Surely not. Do you mean Sintra?

I wouldn’t really with such a short time in Lisbon. If you are going blind with no idea of an itinerary, take a free walking tour on the first day. The history of Lisbon is fascinating and you’ll get your bearings too.

Don’t miss Alfama and take the tram up to the castle, nice cafes and shops around there and fab views.

Yes I meant Sintra of course!

When are you going? We went in late May last year and it was really too hot to do much walking (which is how we like to explore new places).

Probably the thing I most enjoyed was going up to Miradoura da Graca and having drinks on the terrace there one evening!

I liked the castle too - went early one morning and there were no queues.

Caiscais is nice for a day trip.

The aquarium was amazing. We got the bus, tram and ferry three day pass and hopped on and off when we wanted. We had a great time

We’ve just come back from a four night trip to Lisbon. You can visit the main sights in that time and there are plenty of museums and galleries to suit your tastes. We went to the castle, monastery, Belem Tower, Gulbenkian, cathedral and Carmo Convent. Had a day in Cascais which we visited because we wanted to go the Paula Rego museum but is a nice seaside town with beaches and promenade along the coast to the Boca Do Inferno. It’s a cheap and easy 40 minute train ride along the coast. Other than that we walked around Alfama and some of the parks and gardens, there are thousands of places to eat and drink - the Time Out market is great if you don’t mind busy, noisy places! Be warned though, the streets are cobbled and it is hilly so take comfortable shoes. You can always take the tram or elevator if your legs get tired. No 28 is the iconic tram that goes through the old city.

We did a Tuk Tuk tour which was fun. Time Out market.

Thanks all, arrived today and having a lovely time so far. Got the bus up to the castle (supposed to be a tram but they replaced with a bus), saw the castle and had a nice wander.

Doing a walking tour tomorrow morning. We are considering an organised tour to both Sintra and Cascais but it’s expensive and a long day. We are very close to the station so we could just go ourselves.

would you say it's good for kids?

I went in early march 2 years ago (on my own!) and loved Lisbon!

I used the trams to get around, and also the red tourist sightseeing bus which you can hop on and off.

I also did a river trip, which means you see Lisbon from a completely different angle.

Also recommend a visit to Time Out market. I ate there all 3 nights as it felt safe, but buzzing, on my own. And could eat completely different foods each night.

Head to Belem and get the pastel de nata from the original bakery, you can queue just to buy them takeaway rather than sit down. The Quake museum is good if you're interested. LX Factory are worth a visit.

We loved breakfast at Bread and Friends, brunch at The Folks and rooftop cocktails at Java. Getting the train into Sintra is really easy! Lovely for a walk around then pizza and beer at Villa Craft Beer & Bread.
