Anyone been to Galicia in Spain?

Just that really 😊. Looking for somewhere for a week in July. It’s not an area I know but have seen it pop up in various Sunday supplements. Has anyone been and if so would you recommend? Thanks.

Yes it's absolutely beautiful! Gorgeous coastline, pretty towns, lots of interesting history and culture. A bit less boiling hot than some parts of Spain too, which suits me. Dd loved it so much when we went the summer before last that she's decided to do her uni year abroad there.

Yes and yes. The sea is a tiny bit chilly, if that bothers you.

Ah this is excellent news. Any tips on places to stay? It does look gorgeous when I’ve googled.

My father is from Galicia.
It is my favourite Spanish region. Due to its rugged nature, there are more kms of coast in Galicia that in the rest of Spain - This is a fact.
If you can, visit Cape Finisterre. The romans thought that was the end of the world. When you find yourself facing the immense sea at the tip of the peninsula you can totally understand why someone would feel that way 2000 years ago.
Also, try their cuisine, which is based in seafood mainly. Their "pulpo a la gallega" (fair-style octopus) is delicious. For someone who is not familiar with the dish, eating octopus may feel a bit uninviting, but I can assure you that it is divine.

I went there a couple of ago in July. At the time we were having a heatwave at home and it was 21 c and drizzling in Finisterre. The countryside is beautiful, prices lower but it was a little run down in parts. We also went to Santiago de Compostela which is the end of the Camino trail. Nice city, popular with pilgrims.

We stayed in a rented house on the coast near A Coruna on the Coast of Death. (That name is bound to bring in the tourists.) We were near great beaches and also had access to the city which has a few things worth seeing. Santiago is beautiful, but we only went for the day.

We went to the west coast too but that was quite foggy and more touristy.

We spent a week in a cottage somewhere near Lugo about eight years ago, as part of a three week trip around Northern Spain. It was lovely. We visited A Coruña, Santiago de Compostela, Vigo, Lugo and various other small towns and villages as well as some stunning beaches.

You can do a great road trip around the area and down into Portugal, the food is fabulous and plenty of good hotels, including pousadas / paradores. Weather can be hit and miss but if you like rugged coastlines it’s wonderful.

AvonCallingBarksdale · 19/03/2025 16:44

Thanks all. Looks stunning but now a few comments re the weather so wavering 😬

It’s beautiful and amazing food but it was 18 degrees and raining in august when I went! Think Cornwall rather than southern Spain, can be gorgeous and warm but not guaranteed

TrulyMiss · 19/03/2025 16:57

We stayed in Sanxenxo (lovely seaside holiday town) last August. There was a bit of mist/drizzle some mornings but it cleared up by midday and I thought the weather was ideal. One of the only places I'd go in August as worried that it'd be too hot!!

Yes and it’s lovely. The people are very friendly too (though some of the old ones do get a bit stroppy if you speak in either English or Castilian 🤣). Make sure you visit Santiago - it’s quite an experience when the pilgrims arrive!

its beautiful, been a few times as have family there

StanfreyPock · 19/03/2025 17:11

We travelled around that corner of Spain in May/June in our camper van en route to Portugal from Bilbao. It was beautiful, green and rolling hills and forests, but my goodness the rain! it was warm, but poured it down about half the time. We actually gave up camping for a few days as we'd got so damp, and stayed in a hotel in A Coruna - a lovely city and well worth a visit. I even started to admire the locals' wardrobe of light but waterproof coats...

Very green and lush thanks to the constant rain. Have you been to Wales? No different

We spent 2 weeks in Northern Spain in July a few years ago. The 1st week was a road trip from west to east with stops in Puerto de Vega (walked some of the Camino coastal path), Potes (took Fuente De cable car up into the Picos mountains) & Bilbao (day trips to San Sebastian & San Juan de Gaztelugatxe). The 2nd week we based ourselves in Santiago de Compostela and day tripped to Lugo, Ourense, A Coruna & one of our favourite places was A Illa de Arousa. There are also plenty of waterfalls to find and a few mountain peaks to hike in the area. It was pretty hot apart from our day in A Coruna when it was below 20 otherwise it was 25 - 30 degrees (thankfully cooler than it was back in the UK when it was 30+).

Beautiful part of the world. Definitely visit Santiago. Famous for seafood which is wonderful. Haven’t been for a few years but had to rely on DH who is fluent in Spanish as very few people spoke any English. It was great as felt you were really experiencing a different culture. Ribadesella was lovely
