Prague ideas for a 40th birthday

SillySauageSenior · 16/03/2025 16:15

We've booked for 7 of us ladies, aged between 39 and 65ish, to spend 3 nights in Old Town, Prague to celebrate one of our 40th birthdays.

None of us have been before, so we are looking for ideas! Do you have any suggestions of things to do, especially for the Thursday day / night to celebrate the 40th birthday girl?

We all like a drink, but also appreciate good food / museums / old castles etc.

I'm also looking for ideas of how much spending money we will need. Hotel is the central Old Town, so hopefully limited transport needed. Hotel is bed and breakfast, so we'll need money for lunch, dinner, drinks, attractions etc.

Any help and ideas appreciated!

Oh. And we're going in November, so I'm assuming river cruises may be a bit chilly?!

It'll be cold. A walking tour is a brilliant way of orienting yourselves and deciding what you want to go back to (and you may pick up some tips along the way of good places to eat/drink). Some of the architecture is stunning.

I found the Jewish museum really moving. Charles Bridge and the Castle are ticks.

We had a lovely meal and drinks at a rooftop restaurant at a posh hotel in the main square (Google informs me it was the Hotel U Prince). I'd recommend having at the least your first night's meal booked as it could be challenging to find somewhere that can fit you all in (I think we ended up in McD's in desperation our first night).

And the number of stag do's is very amusing.

We went to Prague in February and it was cold (in fact it snowed one day). Thankfully I had packed M&S thermal tights & vests.

This was our first time in Prague and like the poster above I would recommend that one of the first things you do a walking tour to understand where everything is and to learn more about Prague. We did a tips based tour of the old town area which included the Jewish quarter, the Astrological Clock and Charles Bridge, etc. They gave us a list of recommendations for restaurants in the old town (which I have attached below). We also went on a tour of Prague castle and cathedral (including the changing of the guard).

One evening we did a Ghosts and Legends tour, which was more of a fun experience. Saunas and beer baths are very popular, especially for groups. There are also medieval dinners, food/drink tours and evening boat dinners (which are inside).

Spending depends upon what you do. Transport is quite cheap. Restaurants vary considerably (but most of them have their menus listed outside). The tourist areas are usually the most expensive. Avoid cash machines in shops (only use those linked to banks) as the charges can be very high.

We had a great time and I am sure you will too!

Fully recommend the Cloud 9 bar at the Hilton (Prague one, not old town). We stayed there for DD's 21st and had a magical evening drinking cocktails in there. The view is beautiful. The castle/old town is beautiful but I'd avoid the main square/tacky tourist part - we were pestered relentlessly by hawkers.

Ginger and Fred would be a good option for the 40th birthday night. It’s on the top floor of the Dancing House and has great views, fancy food and amazing cocktails. Kampa Park restaurant would be my other choice.

If you like beer, go to a beer spa!

Can I come? 🤣

I went to the Alphonse Mucha Museum, when I visited, and really enjoyed it. It wasn’t too big and had plenty of recognisable pieces, if you like his art.
The trams are a brilliant way to get around.

https://www.mlynec.cz/en/homepage/gallery/menu is lovely. Cocktails at the Obecni Dum. We did a great walking tour of the castle district the last time we went. 2nd Kampa Park.

There is a Medieval night which is a lot of fun with entertainment, food and unlimited beer and wine. There are little seating areas and various entertainer move from area to area, I had a really good night.
I went for my 50th in Feb and did a lunch time cruise on one of the days, it was lovely and cosy.
In the castle there is a palace that does lunch time one hour concerts, I did this on my actual birthday. Then I had a spa treatment at the hotel and went to Kampa Park restaurant for dinner and walked back over Charles Bridge just in time for the clock tower to do its thing, it was fabulous. There’s lots of glass and lights ant the restaurant and it’s glistens over the river.
Email the hotel beforehand about the 40th and they’ll probably arrange a small cake and champagne in the room.
The Monastery is good, you can get a tram up for about a pound and then walk down.
I found the prices similar to the UK but I stick to mainly touristy places.
Promise you will all try a Chimney Cake, they are so nice.

We enjoyed the thermal baths, strahov monastery and eating at the restaurant Hergetova Cihelna, looking over Charles bridge.

Oh that's great!
IME the spas are privatised for just your group, and you each bathe in a hops, water and yeast-filled bathtub with beer taps attached while drinking beer for 2 hours. Ours had straw beds to relax on too. Such a memorable experience.

I was a bit concerned about getting thrush from the yeast bath, but no, all good!

I went there for my 30th, but that was many years ago so can't recall any restaurants etc.
The Christmas markets will likely be on to wander around, get a gluwein etc.

DH and I caught to train to Sedlec to see the ossuary. Not for everyone, but if you want something different to do outside Prague itself, its certainly interesting and unique.
