Mosquito repellent bracelets

Has anyone tried these? I am travelling to the Carribbean next week and always get eaten alive. I don't want to waste my money if they are ineffective though!

They don’t work for me. In my experience, if there are mosquitoes about, I get bitten. However to reduce the number of bites, I cover up with light coloured clothing and I use a decent repellent. Deet works but isn’t pleasant. A new repellent called Picaridin, also works for me. It’s more expensive than Deet but much more pleasant to use.

Stickytreacle · 14/03/2025 19:37

They didn't work for me either, in fa t I think I got bitten more 😯

Tequilamockinbird · 14/03/2025 19:37

They don’t work for me, I still get bitten. I take vitamin B12 tablets and anti histamines for a few weeks before I go, use lemon shower gel and also spray with jungle formula. I do usually still get 1 or 2 bites but nothing like I used to. I’m not sure if it’s all of the things combined which work, or just one of them as I’m too scared to stop any Grin

I use the Deet ones & find them very effective, pack of 4 for wrists & ankles last for 2 weeks.

helpfulperson · 14/03/2025 19:39

I find the bracelets useful as an add on to the jungle formula extra strength.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/03/2025 19:39

I bought a load of these but the problem was getting the blasted mosquitos to wear the wretched things.

Their arms and legs are so small the bracelets seem to just slide off.

backinthebox · 14/03/2025 19:42

I work in the Caribbean. We are told to spray DEET all over and rub it in. So I can’t see how a bracelet would work. Whilst you are unlikely to catch malaria in the Caribbean, there are other unpleasant diseases like Dengue, Zika and Chikunyunga. I’d wear the DEET.

LittleLlama · 14/03/2025 20:24

I have tried the bracelets without much success. Instead I take Anti-histamines (two weeks before my holiday) and while I am away, use plug-ins and air conditioning in the room, wear light coloured loose long sleeved clothes and spray with jungle formula. I also take zappers and creams to deal with any bites. My suitcase is a mini-chemist!

Spieingingwhatsits · 14/03/2025 20:55

You do realise that antihistamines don’t stop you getting bitten?

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 14/03/2025 21:14

We used pestects when we were in Greece and Maldives. We found they worked well.
in the Caribbean I would use DEET if of pregnancy age due to Zika (& the complications that causes)

Carriedoesntlivehereanymore · 14/03/2025 21:18

I always wear them - ankles and wrists - and they really work well for me. I get bitten all over otherwise! I use ‘Pestects’ from Amazon.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 14/03/2025 21:25

One of the hotels we stayed in during our trip to Singapore had complimentary Tiger Balm brand mosquito repellent patches. They seemed to do the job very well.

TadpolesInPool · 14/03/2025 21:26

I live in the Caribbean and no one wears them here.

We use an anti mosquito spray (buy locally), sleep under mosquito tents and use the electric zapping rackets a LOT.

Mosquitoes don't like fans and are attracted by body odour (not lights) so rooms which are regularly air conditioned have far fewer mosquitoes.

They are most lively at dawn and dusk.

doistayordoigo · 15/03/2025 11:37

Went to Mexico recently and used Boots Soltan Protect & Repel suncream that has repellent in it during the day, and then Jungle Formula at night whilst touring around. Once in resort I switched to Skin So Soft at night. We weren't bitten at all, although others on our tour were, so there were definitely mozzies about.

Hoppinggreen · 15/03/2025 11:39

I bought some for Mexico last year.
We wore them alongside the usual spray ons mostly but when we were swimming in an environment where you had to shower off Mozzie repellant we wore around 3 each and still got bitten to buggery
They do look pretty though

Lovelysummerdays · 15/03/2025 11:57

I find they help a bit with midgies. Not really helpful with mosquitos I tend to go full on b12 tablets. I have a fabric spray which is strong deet based insect repellant. Before I go I spray all my clothes and leave to dry. Lightweight long sleeves so lots of coverage. I spray myself too but Ive found the fabric spray really effective.

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 15/03/2025 11:59

I did. I was bitten all around them. Concentrated bites. It’s like it gave off a signal to mozzies ‘snacks here’.

Pestects patches worked the best.

Chewbecca · 15/03/2025 12:01

Use spray! The Superdrug own brand one works well for me.

Gravytanned · 15/03/2025 12:13

Reading with interest as I can’t use a spray on my skin but get horribly bitten here and abroad.
I haven’t tried the bracelets and will look at the tiger balm patches too.

Doggydoctor · 15/03/2025 14:14

The bracelets are a fashion accessory for me, I bitten to buggery with them on.
I have been hospitalised twice with bites having to get IV antibiotics to help, I get bitten so bad. Tried all know remedies Avon useless deet okish my god the smell.
My GP prescribes strong antihistamines to take 1 wk before departure, they won’t stop the bites but they do lesson the swelling if bitten.
I have used the lemon cologne below for the past two years, not had a severe reaction at all. Cover exposed limbs and face every time your out and after swimming. It also smells quite nice. on Amazon.

Duru Lemon Traditional Turkish Cologne Aftershave, Citrus, 400 ml
Brand: Duru

getmeavodka · 15/03/2025 14:43

Thank you all. Will probably stick to the jungle formula then and take antihistamines and cortisone cream for the bites

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 15/03/2025 14:48

Pointless. Just get the DEET

Game0fCrones · 15/03/2025 14:50

They didnt work for me and I put one on my wrist and another on my ankle.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 15/03/2025 18:24

I think some posters have used bracelets that are not DEET - they are certainly not pretty (plain black).

BadSkiingMum · 15/03/2025 18:32

There is a BBC Sounds episode of ‘Sliced Bread’ that evaluates all the options.

At one point the presenter actually tests them by putting his bare arm against the mesh side of a cage containing 10,000 mosquitos, and all their close personal friends!
