Where can I go as a smoker

Hi, can I still travel abroad and smoke? Are there countries where it is not allowed? I mean smoking outside specifically - I'm not after indoor smoking. I want to go on holiday and would like some advice please as I am scared about going abroad as a smoker, I don't know if that's crazy but would really like some non-judgemental advice if possible. Looking to travel from London to Europe ideally.

Italy has a new law where you can’t smoke outside within 10 metres of someone else, but it’s new this year and I’ve not really seen it enforced, but most people seem to comply. At work there’s a huddle of smokers relegated to the farthest end of the car park and I don’t see many people with actual cigarettes anymore. More frequent are those dreadful and stinky Iqos and the like.

Greece has quite relaxed rules on smoking. High number of resident smokers there.

We go to the South of France every year, and they're still big smokers there.

Ashtrays on the tables.

We did a boat trip, and the driver was smoking.

They only ask you to be careful about where you dispose of your cigarettes, particularly during high winds, because of the risk of wild fires.

Just to add, I always take out a small portable ashtray in my bag (with a lid) so I can dispose of my cigarettes. Hate littering and wouldn't want to start a fire!

I just empty it in the bin hours later when back at my accommodation.

France, especially Paris is exceptionally smoker friendly.

abricotine · 11/03/2025 09:29

In Serbia you can smoke indoors still. It’s a very interesting place with some great sights, although I didn’t enjoy this aspect personally!

BitOutOfPractice · 11/03/2025 09:31

We were in Croatia last year (not the coast, the capital, Zagreb), and we were amazed at how many smokers there were there, including indoors.

very well done @Ohnohelphelpehlp on getting and staying clean.

Travel to Serbia is no longer recommended by the uk government.

It's funny. When I was younger/ before my issues, I had a big group of Spanish friends and they all smoked, it seemed very common over there. It's strange to imagine Spain being more anti-smoking than Germany.

I don't think Spain is anti smoking at all. I've been to Spain many times over the years, the latest being last year and everyone is still puffing away.

Could you provide authority for that? I’m quite surprised to read it.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 11/03/2025 09:40

Check online about smoking in airports. We have been to spain and corfu which you can smoke outside of places no problem, its quite the norm but once you are in the airport there are no smoking areas (or weren't when we went. Malta however have a massive airport and a really large smoking lounge so you are not stuck in there 2-3 hours without a smoke.

Nothing on the Foreign Office page for Serbia.

Ohnohelphelpehlp · 11/03/2025 10:14

Thank you everyone for the advice and support.
I would be fine not being allowed to smoke indoors (even prefer it I think, I can't really imagine indoor smoking these days) but good to know it's still allowed outdoors in most places. As awful as it is I just don't feel I'd be able to enjoy a holiday if I couldn't smoke at all. Will Def be bringing a vape and patches though just in case.

We were in France last summer and people were smoking sitting at outside tables at restaurants, my kids didn't really like it, but definitely seems to be perfectly acceptable.

I beg your pardon (and to @Bjorkdidit ) they’ve downgraded the threat from last summer when I was planning a Balkan road trip.

It wouldn’t be top of my list anyway (along with Bosnia) at the moment given tensions in the region.

I did think a back up vape might be good. I will probably bring one x

Hi. Yes a vape is better. At least you can do that stealthily. Enjoy your holiday x

minnienono · 11/03/2025 10:29

The laws tend to be similar to here, not inside and only in designated places in restaurants outside

abricotine · 11/03/2025 10:33

@BitOutOfPractice I went last summer so that’s not right either. I also plan to travel more in the region, it’s fascinating.

Nutmuncher · 11/03/2025 10:37

Huge Congratulations on your 2 years clean! You managed to slay one dragon how about going for another and losing the cigarettes? Your lungs, arteries, mouth, heart, throat, blood stream and skin will be profusely grateful.

all I know is what it said when I was researching at the start of 2024 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely I agree. It’s a great region. I’m just not comfortable with the cosy relationship between Russia and Serbia and the tensions in the ethnic Serbian parts of BH. Just my take on it. I think we are going to concentrate on Montenegro and Albania instead this year.

None of this relevant to the OP’s question.

piscofrisco · 11/03/2025 11:00

We were in Hamburg airport a few weeks ago and I was amazed to see a sort of indoor Perspex shed, in the terminal, between two cafes, with all the smokers inside puffing away. So I'd say certainly in Germany but probably in lots of European countries you'll be fine.
