Athens and where else in Greece in October?

We are considering going to Greece for a week in late October over the kids’ break and I’m a bit stuck where to go after Athens. Was keen to go to an island but DH’s friend who used to live there said everything is shut down and water too cold to swim by then even in the more southerly islands like Crete and Rhodes. We aren’t looking for a full-on beach vacation but if we were to go to an island we’d naturally want to mix in some beach time with sightseeing, and kids would probably be disappointed if they couldn’t swim at all. And I don’t want to be stuck with hotel dinners every night.

So where else should we consider as an alternative where beaches are less of a draw and restaurants, etc. are still open? Something with a nice mix of outdoor activities, nice scenery, and historical attractions would be ideal.

I think if you go to the islands very near to Athens they will still be busy ish as they are popular weekend getaways for Athenians.

Nafplio is a nice holiday vibe town on the mainland near ish to Athens - there are various sights to see along the way if you self drive.

That’s a great suggestion, thank you. Also thought about a day trip to Delphi, so maybe we’d stay an extra day in Athens and then go to one of the close islands for a couple nights. Any opinions on Aegina, Hydra, or others? The car-free aspect of Hydra is appealing.
