I’m on maternity leave at the moment so quite limited budget this year for a holiday, DH, me, baby and 2 primary aged kids. Please could anyone suggest any UK holiday ideas under £1000 (not camping or holiday parks please)

Have you done London and the museums?

GandTtwice · 09/03/2025 10:16

Where are you travelling from OP? And how far would you like to go? By car or public transport

Weymouth

Lots of YHA properties are suitable for families with young children. YHA Boggle Hole is right by the beach and has a pirate themed cafe, private en suite rooms, kitchenette, large garden for exploring and a lounge area with games.

Thank you, that sounds lovely! We’ll take a look

Yes we did a 1 night stay in London a couple of years ago and kids loved the museums etc, was more wanted to see so think we’ll go back for a day trip at some point

We live near Nottingham, wouldn’t mind up to 3-4 hours by car, We’d love to go to Europe again as some amazing holiday parks which are fantastic value but so expensive by train and too far for baby in car

Have a look at West Wales - Ceredigion, it's really beautiful with great beaches. More people go further south to Pembrokeshire so Ceredigion tends to be cheaper and quieter. Areas like New Quay, Llangrannog, Aberporth, Mwnt beach, Poppit sands.

Cantkidakidda · 09/03/2025 12:32

You could book a cottage, sites like sykes are good they show reviews, giod filter ootions and things in the area etc we have 2 primary aged children and do this some years, always have a lovely holiday!

TLH Leisure resort, Torquay.
Lots of facilities for kids, a complex of four hotels.
Children under 10 go free including meals in school holidays.
It’s not posh but there’s loads to do and ours loved it.
Just checked, 4 night half board in May half term is £608 for 2 adults and 2 children.

I’ve just booked a lovely little cottage in Wales for a week in August for £600 there’s lots of attractions nearby and we’ve not been for years so will enjoy just having a look around. We will eat out lots and not bother cooking so it feels more like a holiday. It’s the first time in years we haven’t been abroad but we’ve done so much to the house it’s just a stretch to far this year, but I’m looking forward to a UK holiday.

HeddaGarbled · 09/03/2025 17:21

We stayed in a self-catering cottage in Yorkshire last July for £600. That was through Sykes as mentioned by @Cantkidakidda above.

Agree that YHA family rooms are good. There are some nice ones on the beach - Treyarnon Bay, Manorbier, Beer. They have en suite rooms & usually have cafe & a bar.

Cantkidakidda · 09/03/2025 21:00

Just a thought, is there a reason you don't want a holiday park? As we have been to haven but on the hide away option so no passes for entertainment, we don't like the evening entertainment and cabaret type nights so we'd only really use for swimming but that's an expensive swim so we just don't choose that option, you can still use the bar/restaurant and arcade and park etc and could definitely get something under £1000 they are usually close to beaches too if that's what you like.

I would look at Northumberland - tons to do for kids, beautiful quiet beaches, castles, Alnwick Garden, National Trust places, fabulous fish and chips, boat trips etc etc. usually relatively affordable, plenty of AirBnBs available in your budget.

Sportacus17 · 09/03/2025 21:01

We are renting an apartment in Bowness on Windermere for £680, 7 nights. Train fares (from Edinburgh) with railcard £50 return.

Goldenmemories · 09/03/2025 21:15

Try airbnb, I found a 6berth caravan on a quiet site in Devon with hot tub for £88 per night. Booked 3 nights. Bargain!

Liverpool, great city to explore many free museums and it also has a few good beaches.
North Wales a place for all interest and budgets, Conwy Llandudno area is a good base.

madamweb · 11/03/2025 08:18

Less than £1000 is perfectly doable. Try pockets of countryside that arent key tourist destinations like Devon /Cornwall but are still beautiful. Looking inland helps as well rather than on the coast

We've been to the Brecons, Yorkshire dales, Northumberland, North York moors, isle of wight (inland) , South Downs... None had crazy prices and there was heaps of lovely countryside and things to do

backinthebox · 11/03/2025 08:22

Youth Hostels. Loads of good family friendly ones, but book ahead, as the best ones book up really quickly. I stayed in Edale YH recently with my daughter and I think we didn’t pay more than about £50 a night and that included breakfast.

Welshcake15 · 11/03/2025 08:23

Have you checked out Bluestone in Pembrokeshire? It's usually very reasonable.

I second this, Northumberland is stunning and relatively cheap.
