Doing your laundry on a Scandinavia trip?

Three of us are travelling for almost a month by train/ferry in the summer. I’m trying to limit us to a medium wheeled case each at the most.

I’ve googled laundry services in the cities we’re going to be in and they seem to be non existent outside of hotels. I don’t want to be paying hotel prices if there’s another option.

Does anyone have any knowledge of this (boring) subject 😂please?

I'd agree with one night twice during the trip in air bnb. Probably no more expensive than trying to find and pay for launderettes and getting the stuff there and lugging it back to hotel.

Adjust hotel bookings to do this. Easiest way all round and it's what I'd do. But I'm not you and understand you want the luxury of a hotel etc.

Thanks but that’s not what I want to do, if there’s an easy collection/delivery option I’ll do it, other I’ll just have to pay hotel prices if we need to.

We have got ridiculous baggage allowances - 138kg plus cabin luggage between us, bonkers. I guess I’ll get over wheeling a large bag rather than a medium one.

We came up against this when we had an interrailing trip which included Sweden and Denmark. Our Stockholm accommodation didn't have a washing machine, so that was a challenge, especially as we'd taken very little luggage, for obvious reasons. I hadn't realised about the dearth of launderettes.

I did resort to washing a few things by hand but not ideal.

We do 3 months around Asia with hand luggage only. I take laundry sheets with me and wash everything in the sink including jeans. They dry out quickly where there's air-conditioning.

Hand wash.

We're at the Raddison in Trondheim @IngenTing .

Now I've looked into it a bit more we will probably take enough clothes for ten days minimum and see how we get on.

Yes @TizerorFizz to a degree, I'll be wearing relatively quick dry clothes most of the time, I suspect that my young adults will be a different matter.

I don't mind washing the odd thing by hand, but I really am not up for doing much.

That's a great hotel, just a short walk out of the city centre. If you don't want to use a collection service, the staff at the hotel will definitely help you. I lived in Trondheim for 10 years (lastvyear we moved into the mountains away from the city) and used to use the Raddisson for some events, board meetings etc, they are very accommodating, so you'll be very well looked after.
Feel free to PM me, I know this region of Norway well, it's been my home for 15 years.

We were in Sweden last summer. The hotel was offering laundry at a fiver per item 😱. I was there with my disabled husband and we were travelling light as I was carrying a rucksack whilst pushing the wheelchair. The Head of Housekeeping took pity on me and let me use the machine they used for tea towels etc.

Basically all apartments in Sweden have to have laundry facilities and using the communal laundry room in the building is completely un-stigmatised, so there’s no market for laundromats. But I’m surprised at the prices for that laundry. I used to work in a dry cleaner 20 years ago and we offered a wash-and-tumble-dry by the kilo for much much less - even adjusting for inflation that was a hefty price!

This place tvättomaten.se offers a laundromat style service as far as I can make out at 150kr for one machine at 40 degrees.

Edit: awful website but information in English here tvättomaten.se/engelska/

MarcescaJacobs · 09/03/2025 06:38

@SpanThatWorld , wow!

We’ll now have to take a proper case each. I’d rather not take a cabin case in addition because we’ll need to deal with them both as we travel, but we’ll see.

Thank you @IngenTing that’s very kind of you.

I use a cabin top bag that fits over the handle of the bigger bag with a sleeve. It's not a full cabin size but stacking works for us because it means we still get the spinner wheels on the bigger suitcase. Much easier to manoeuvre. Mostly the luggage allowance is 22kg. That's enough for most people. Even when we went to the Antarctic with lots of gear!

Cyclistmumgrandma · 09/03/2025 09:17

Invest in a travel washing line and some laundry sheets. Also some merino wool t-shirts. They need washing less often and dry overnight when hand washed. I buy mine from Smartwool or Icebreaker in their sales. Look at Rohan travel clothing. Each item states its drying time on the listing. We managed a month crossing Canada by train, car and ferry with hand luggage only.

Cyclistmumgrandma · 09/03/2025 09:23

Handwashing (well foot washing really) in the shower.

Well that didn't help as the photos didn't upload!

MarcescaJacobs · 09/03/2025 09:35

Thanks @Cyclistmumgrandma but that’s definitely not for me.

Our luggage allowance is 2x23kg each plus cabin, as I said before I have no desire to max it out.

I won’t be doing much if any handwashing/foot washing or anything other than sending what I need out for washing.

Thanks all.

I had totally forgotten this place excited, but this place in Dtockholm has a similar vibe to Laundromat Cafe- washing, beer and food.

Thing is, I was in bergen and oslo in summer 2024, it was cold and rainy. I had to buy jumpers.
