Travel insurance when under going investigations

My 2 x dd are currently awaiting medical investigations. Both are awaiting a biopsy for potential diagnosis of coeliac. And 1 also has an MRI scan booked for the end of this month.

We have booked to go to Belgium over May half term. I have so far not found anywhere that will discuss travel insurance with me. Lots of companies will provide for existing medical conditions. But not for medical conditions under investigation.

Any suggestions?

It's a pain, and I've found you get further by ringing them than trying to do it online.

Ones we've tried in the past (there always seems to be someone here being investigated for something) are All clear, Staysure and Coversure. Sadly I can't remember which of those actually covered the last trip!

Sometimes you can get cover for 'anything except the thing at issue', and then you need to decide whether to take that smaller risk

Just checked, and Allclear covered us last time, with exclusions for anything related to the investigation.

Thank you. I have found that companies won't cover the things being investigated. And I worry if they are unwell whilst away then it could be claimed the conditions under investigation are responsible or have a bearing. Although as we are only going to Belgium I'm wondering if it will be ok as can use GHIC

I feel your pain. DD has had her whole genome mapped and it takes 6 months for the results to come back and she's refusing to stay in the country and heading off to Asia. I've declared all her known medical conditions and paid a fortune for insurance but if they find out about the genome mapping I'm sure they can exclude anything. But if we told them about it they wouldn't cover anything at all I don't think. Because everything is being investigated with that!

I am no ghic expert but I think it would maybe cover you for emergency type hospital treatment (check). But it certainly wouldn't cover you if you needed medically repatriating.

This article may provide you with some companies you can try.

I actually ended up in the UK as had an outstanding referral last year. The referral was for a long standing condition that, although needs sorting, wouldn’t affect my holiday.

Staysure will probably cover you, but the policy will have conditions awaiting diagnosis excluded.

Is there any scenario where it would be acceptable that you declare for insurance purposes that they both have coeliac disease, given that's like a worst case outcome of these investigations. Is the MRI for something else?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/03/2025 07:36

YY to Staysure.
They covered us, but not for anything related to what ds was being investigated for.

MRI is for headaches and arm pain. Although this is booked for 25/03. So can wait till after the MRI to book the travel insurance as then that won't be an outstanding investigation. But would just be the coeliac investigations then

Last time we were in that position I just called up and spoke to the travel insurance company and said that we had a working diagnosis of x but were still waiting on tests to confirm.
It took ages on the phone but, in my case, they said fine, added it to the policy and off I went. My particular condition didn't add any extra charge it was just a case of making sure it and any medication was on the list so they couldn't deny the claim if anything happened. It was my GP who gave me the exact wording of the working diagnosis to report.
