Japan in late June early July

DH and I both have big birthdays this year and we would like to go to Japan.
We want DS to be able to come too but as he's at University we are tied to specific dates.

The travel agent priced up for the last week in June first in July. He said the weather/temperature would be around 23 degrees.

I've been reading some posts on another forum saying that in June the heat and humidity are unbearable. DH sweats at the best of times and I'm worried this is a bad time to go.

Can I please have some personal experiences/opinions if we are making a mistake booking?

We priced for Christmas time but it took us £2000 over our budget so not an option.

Depends what you are doing. Most buildings in Tokyo are air conditioned so if you don't mind sweating a bit in between then you will manage.

Join some FB Japan planning groups & watch YouTube videos of those travel bloggers who who go then to show what it's like. It's apparently next level hot & humid & rains a lot.

I can't talk, though. We're going in peak Sakura season shortly & it's still snowing! 🤣

It's a set itinerary and covers Tokyo, Takayama, Kanazawa, Hiroshima, Kyoto, Kawaguchiko/Mt Fuji.

I used to know someone that lived in Japan, they said that everyone tries to get out of Japan in June as the heat at that time of year is unbearable!

ProfessorLayton1 · 05/03/2025 12:22

We went in July as that's the only time we could go, the heat and humidity is something I have never experienced and I come from South Asia. Saying that, we absolutely loved it and had a blast. You need to plan for things early in the morning, retreat to hotel in the afternoon and venture out in the evenings.
Do it independently as it is very safe , easy and straightforward to organise yourself

Tatemoderndrawyourown · 05/03/2025 12:26

Bad, bad idea. That’s the end of typhoon season, and the weather is already hot. Plus you are going south, just don’t.

I was in Tokyo and Kyoto on the last week of June last year with my children who are late teens.
We live in Sydney, Australia so live in a hot, fairly humid climate, and we found it to be quite hot and humid at times.
It can also rain very heavily at this time of year but we found it too hot for rain coats so just used umbrellas and got quite wet.
We found the vending machines that are on almost every street corner invaluable and cheap so we just bought water and electrolyte drinks throughout the day to keep hydrated. We also bought ice cream at the 7 eleven to keep cool.
Though we loved our time there I will definitely return to Japan I would probably not go back again at this time of year. For us the humidity was the real killer.

@ProfessorLayton1 doing it independently isn't something we'd feel comfortable with. Usually DH is a great DIYer but he doesn't feel confident enough to navigate Japan ourselves.

We were in Italy last year and the temperature was around 30 and we found it too warm and made me grouchy 😬

I think my feelings about June are to give it a miss.

If you have a choice, then it's better to go some other time. We didn't ..

CountTo10 · 05/03/2025 12:38

We went beginning g of Sept for similar reasons (son at Uni) and hoping it would have cooled a bit by then. Omg it was about 35 degrees the whole time we were there. We obviously did loads of walking around and frankly the heat made it exhausting.

Boys 22 and 18 didn't seem bother but I'm old and it was hard going.

holidaydreaming · 05/03/2025 23:40

I was there exactly that time last year. I really struggle with heat but found it totally doable. The rain is the problem. EVERYONE carries umbrellas as it can be torrential but I def would go again at that time of year. The weather really didn’t impede our enjoyment.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 05/03/2025 23:44

Probably one of the worst times of the year to go to Japan, I'm afraid. Hot, humid and wet!

Spring or autumn would be the best bet. It's well worth a visit!

llareggub · 05/03/2025 23:47

That’s exactly when I am going! I have no choice, it’s with work.

I don’t do heat very well, but we are doing lots of indoor things so maybe it will be fine

ellerman · 05/03/2025 23:51

Honestly, you'll enjoy it more if you go March, April, May but avoid Golden week. Or Mid Sept to early November. It's so humid!

BigDahliaFan · 06/03/2025 00:45

I lived there for a while, the summers are incredibly hot, the rain is next level. It's more comfortable to go another time of year. You'll have a much nicer experience. We went in November and it was fabulous, the tree colours were amazing.

Bestbefore2030 · 06/03/2025 07:36

Thank you so much for your feedback. It confirmed what I was thinking. We have decided against going in June.

As suggested by previous posters I have joined a Japan group and we will look into doing the trip independently.

You can Google AccuWeather Tokyo June 2024, and it will give you actual temperatures for June last year. Mostly well above 30 degrees. Although sometimes it defaults to 2025 predictions. When I lived there it was pleasant end of May/beginning of June, but at some point during June the humidity and heat really ramped up. It's warm but bearable if you are living there as you acclimatize as it's happening, but it's not the best time to visit as a tourist.
